Hurry up with the gat damned story already!! |
Volume is closed - It's About Time!!!
I wonder what Kevin Dowdell will do now. This will look really good on his resume. Princeton and Wharton graduate waste millions, trying to stoke his ego. Maybe Kevin will try to be the next Quincy Jones or LA Reid. Kevin has always wanted to be down with the movers and shakers in the industry. Millions of $$ later and you still ain't down. Kevin, I hope you have gotten the message by now. You need a desk job where some else is calling the shots, definitely not you. You wouldn't know a profit center if it hit you in the head.
Volume ... such a waste of resources, time, and money |
Damn UE, gonna see all these folks die a slow embarrassingly funny death let's see:
UBO
James Andrews (The Cube, Ha-ha, let that one go.)
360 Hip Hop
Scott Mills (Sexual Harasser Extrodinare)
One Level
Net Noir
and the list goes on and on and on....when is it gonna get to the point where folks are gonna demolish the house and rebuild in another spot. |
to : It's about time
It's about time you spoke some sense and stopped hating. Anyone with
sense knows the business model that the Internet is based on doesn't
work, that the industry is in a shambles and that some of the best
minds on the planet have shut down their operations in the last 18
months or so. Spielberg shut his down, Yahoo is retrenching and even
@Home is in bankruptcy. Anyone with sense knows that AOL probably
didn't put any real promotional resources behind Volume.com because
they are having trouble promoting and selling some of their biggest
brands like CNN. And anyone with sense knows that only someone with a
lot of passion, knowledge, determination and charisma could have
possibly kept Volume.com going and growing given the circumstances.
As a member, I know there is a lot of love in the volume.com
community and that most people there like the site more than Black
Planet, BET or any of the urban sites talked about on UE. And,
finally, anyone with sense would know that only small minded people
would still harbor hate for something as trivial as this when the
world is at WAR. Get with the times!
what da hell is wrong with you ? did get canned or somthing.?
look, we got anthrax outbreaks going on all over the city/country and all you can do is spread more nonsense.
we are in real trouble now. maybe some of these broken down urban portals can use thier sites to help somehow? who knows ? but the point is hating on UE is meaningless now after the attacks.

Deron,
You know what it’s time for? People to learn the difference between the cold hard truths and hating’. Facts are facts. Yea, lots of companies, most with shitloads of other people’s money, have shutdown in the past 18 months. Were they some the best minds on the planet? I think not.
Actually, most of them were people who believed the whole pipe dream that somehow the basics of business had changed.
That somehow providing information and services for free you could still make money.
Or, that the notion that it takes at 5-7 years for your company to turn a decent profit of any sort, so you can not or should not spend profit that you REALLY don’t have yet, was an “old economy” thought.
Or, just they were just a bunch of greedy bastards, looking out for self.
You decide.
Don’t sleep, there are companies making money on the Internet. Companies who built up slowly and as they needed, or those that, gasp, actually had a business plan and were not following the next “Killer App” or believing the “magically turning eyeballs into profit” trick.
You want to know what would have kept Volume.com up and running? Perhaps giving a well-defined audience what they really are looking for on the web. Well-written, consistently updated information from an urban point of view. (And please let’s not go back into the argument of what is urban, ya’ll know what I mean.)
Not young-minded meat-markets (Blackplanet/Voices) or inch-deep, mile-wide content on some sections and reams of old and uninteresting information on your niche (BET.com).
While it has been fun to laugh at the downfall of some these so called businesses, what I want to know is when is somebody, anybody going to fill the void of urban-oriented information on the Web. Big ups to Stankmag.com though, I’m feeling the style and voice of that site.
|
Celess,
Thanks for the shout out. Just having some fun with Stankmag since ain't much left ya know?
Oh yeah...it's www.stankmag.net. But www.stankmagazine.com works too. hee!
Thanks again though.

Deron (AKA the crew over at the NOW defunct Volume.com)
please, alright? You wasted millions and showed up with nothing, NO BUZZ at all, now you're gone. Good riddance. Volume.com was a colossial UBOstyle fuckup. I think it's hilarious, that all you so called Urban Executives were sitting at the conferences shooting the shit when you had no idea what you were doing. And now NONE of you have jobs. Resorted to spamming folks and hocking OTC stocks at 3 cents a share. Not one of you are left and those that are hanging by a thread.
Let's see Who's left? Vanguarde Media? Who wants to take bets on how much longer that will last? All you chickheads over there better be on alert and go looking for some rapper or ballplayer to shack up with real quick. Because the party's over for you. |
It's About Time said :
I wonder what Kevin Dowdell will do now?
I say:
Team up with Kevin Powell? =D |
to celess :
i know the difference between hating and speaking the truth.
"it's about time", was hating. YOU were not.
there is some truth to what you said. the traditional internet business model was working at one point in time look at Yahoo! , for example. i believe the problem is being able to dramaticly shift your appraoch. in large org's it's not always easy to make radical shifts and still get the $$$ backing.
i dont think its over for a lot of these urban sites. the infrastructure is in place all they need is a new idea.
once the market turns around i think we will see this happen.
remember this is the first time around for all of these companies , there were bound to be a large number of failures , i believe the next generation of urban sites will be better.
Oh and by the way , why doesn't anyone on this site use thier REAL NAMES.
dis X-FILES sh** is stupid..
stand up for what you believe in PUT YOUR NAME ON YOUR SH** !

i may not like it, but censorship seems inevitable where popular opinon and majority rules...and it pretty much will continue. Aaron exposes bullshit within us and society at large..and those that control the media...
you know the rest...
deron;
and if i, or anyone else choose not to use our government names, does that make our posts and opinions any less valid?
less believable?
less authentic?
whats "stupid" your eyes, is fine by another...
"do you".. (damn i dislike that phrase)..and let us do how we do. |
I do believe I seent Mr. McGruder in a a bookstore last week buying the book, The 40 Ways to Power or whateva the title is.
But Isidro, although the issue is about censorship, I think even Aaron knows that his core readership is not reading him in the newspaper. But again, that's NOT the issue. I do find that to be an interesting element though.
What is surprising to me is that these papers are NOW just censoring him. There have been some others in the past few weeks that have dropped him. But this either you're with us or you're against us mentality is scary. What price patriotism? |

deron, come on baby please.....My job is none of your damn business. But right now, its provoking you enough to get your feelings hurt to post. |
Have you guys seen the posts in the Forum at Fuckedcompany.com under Volume's demise. You may want to check out what these guys are saying. Here is my post:
"I have to say that I was not expecting such a pungent outpouring of hate
when I came in here to post my thoughts on the demise of Volume.com.
Sure, these forums have always been about posting the irreverent
thought, but the comments posted here cannot be construed as anything
other than racist.
Notice, though, that these opinionated posters cannot see fit to use
their real names when discoursing on philosophy and sociology. These
cowardly types hide under sheets and crowds and pseudonyms, but never
stand alone behind their real names. So much for courage of conviction."
|
The blatant racism and ignorance at FC.com is well known and documented.
Should have seen it when UBO went down.
Being a black female working in the Web Industry for the past 2-3 years, it certainly does not surprise me.
What really worries me is that some of them are the same people making major hiring and management decisions at some company.
But, as any frequent visitor here can attest to, anonymous posting brings out the D-Bo in everybody.

New York, NY
October 12, 2001
Dear Friends,
We regret to inform you that Volume.com will cease operations on November 1, 2001. After November 1, the site will no longer be accessible via the Internet.
Volume.com first launched in November 2000.
- Over the last year, we have grown tremendously, passing the 1 Million Unique Visitor mark in August.
- Our Member Profile Pages and Message Boards are key attractions of the site that have allowed many of our members to become stars.
- Online programming such as the Makin' Moves cartoon, short films on Indieland, unsigned artists on Black Market, Caught Out There, Undercover Freak, The Mos Def webcast (benefit for Nkiru Center in Brooklyn), Shopping Mall, and much more were warmly received by you, the Volume members.
We were hoping to keep it going, but due to adverse economic conditions we had to make the difficult decision to cease operations.
Your words of support over the last one year were greatly appreciated and will always be remembered! The Volume Team would like to especially thank the following members for their dedication to helping us grow:

I was really trying to say that you appear to be cheerleading volume.com but what value were you members who did nothing but e-flirt and used up volume.com RAM? It's not a jab to you, but something to think about the urban business model. Why is the urban business model always based on imitating Black Bike Week photo sites and IRC chatrooms?
I thought volume was going to be something other than a blackplanet.com wannabe before it launched. How I was dissapointed...
|
Isidro,
Yeah, that element in the McGruder/Boondocks situation is extraordinarily interesting as McGruder is still reaching his audience. But I'm really surprised that it has taken this long for papers to drop him. If ya ask me, the current circumstances just really gives these editors an excuse (if they really needed one). But here's my question: it is really censorship if a paper decides NOT to carry a strip because of the subject matter. I'm speaking in general here as we all know those papers that dumped him did so because of his satirical look at the government during this "war on terrorism." But in ordinary circumstances, if papers choose not to carry him would we perceive that as being censorship? Also, are you truly censored if you're still reaching your audience? The Boondocks was not only available in newspapers. It can be read at ucomics. com or even on okayplayer.com. So is McGruder really being censored?
One last thing (and this is the $10,000 question) how long will it be before Universal Comics, his distributor, drops him. That, to me, would indicate a serious attempt to silence him. |
Not that anybody asked me but . . .
I don't see the pulling of Boondocks as censorship mainly because it's an editor's choice as to what does and doesn't get published.
He/She that pays the cost is the boss. But I say go on wit yo bad self McGruder cause the strip is on point and funny ass hell!
Also, I don't think its an attempt to silence Aaron specifically, because, I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but all media outlets have basically silenced ANY opposition to the Bush Administration or the war, period.
Let the media tell it, 90-95 percent of Americans are okay with the war and all the new wiretapping laws. I don't think thats the case.
I think that once this stuff cools off and goes into the US War on Drugs type-of-mode (a year or so from now after Bin Laden is caught and we have forgotten and moved on to the movement du-jour) that minorities will be the primary targets of these new expanded rights of the government. So watch what ya say and who ya say it to . . .
|
Smurfetta,
Again, I agree with you, on everything except one point, I do believe it's censorship based on the fact that they pulled the strip due to content. Some papers have moved his strip to the editorials, they feel it's more of a personal statement that McGruder is making.
If they never carried his strip from the start that's one thing, but, to pull the strip because of content (and isn't what he's saying true?)...
Folks, we better start investing in distribution lines. |
Gee, who didn't see this coming?
The numbers weren't all that, despite the rhetoric from Kevin and Naeem. The only visitors to the site with any real volume came from a strategic spot on Apple's Quicktime "Hot Picks" page, which is basically a guarantee of "dead-end hits."
The site basically sucked. It started as a site with unique content and stories and later devolved into a steaming, stinky pile of poo-poo. The online store was a farce, and the content rarely changed except for the CNN news section. The spelling and grammatical errors in the two-paragraph long stories was ridiculous. Quality control, anyone? A discussion forum does not a site make. Asking visitors to basically be your only source of content is weak.
The end was in sight long ago, and the smart folks bailed early to move on to a job that actually had a future. The truly lucky ones were the folks that got axed last summer and got a juicy severance.
Nothing to see here, folks. Move along. Move along... Peace. |
Peace and Blessings
I would like to comment on the closing of Volume.Com. I know that everyone is talking bad about Kevin Dowdell and what he should have or could have done. The point is that he did something to make a few people notice. OK! it didn't work but most internet sites, even the best people behind the scenes have fell. With all that is going on in the world today, we as professionals need to pool our resources together. I have been in the business of music for some time now and we need to look at the big picture and stop wasting time on things that don't exist. TIME TO WAKE UP FOLKS!

I can't imagine anything worst than Savoy to be honest with you. I'm waiting for the answer. |
Blackvoices - The Print Magazine get's my vote. |
Maybe UBO: The Movie, but then again that would probably be a hilarious slapstick comedy. Watch them as random creditors try to get their money, and UBO invests millions in stocking up Bedazzlers.....
Blackvoices? Don't play like that, that's just cruel.
I was asking you all what was worse than Savoy.....damn Im still trying to come up a magazine worse.....oooh let me think about that one. |
No really, there is a Blackvoices Magazine, it focuses on activities at HBCUs.(Now thats good reading!)
Ooh, what about Black Elegance (BE), bout that!
|
Activites at HBCUs? ooh Im sure that's interesting. Why can't they just look at their college's bulletin board? Black Elegance, is that still in publication? Any thing associated with Asondra Hunter can't be good, well, if its a Annex class on "How to get Urban Executives to Hook Up with You and give you jobs you are totally unqualified for" Look at her wonders at Honey. Not that its any better than the day she left it. It went from chickenhead deluxe, to chickenhead with cash, and its just boring.
Still looking for something worse than Savoy.... |
So basically Blackvoices Magazine covers every frat and sorority party and step show at the HBCUs? Now that's good reading! Where can I gets me a copy? Needs to be updated on who won the last step show at Fisk. |
Smurfetta,
It was the Deltas at Homecoming last year. Semi-Fisk Alum here. (Started there, finished elsewhere.)
If they really wanted to gain some readers, they would cover who's creepin where and with who on the Yard. Now, thats real good readin'. |
I know what's worse than Savoy, Black Men and Ebony. The prose is just God awful in Black Men, the pictures horrible, it just plain sucks. It seems to exist only for relaxer ads. Ebony? Do I need to say more? By the way, what's wrong with this site? they don't update anything anymore. |
igotajob:
UBO the Movie. Brilliant! I think Alicia Keyes should make her acting debut as Dream Hampton.
|
Celess,
So the ooooh ooop girls won? lol...what chu know about meharry? They have step shows there too? What about Bethune Cookman? Damn..gotta gets me a copy of this magazine. They got ALL the scoop fa sho! |
WOAH!
UBO: The Movie, starring Alicia Keys as Dream Hampton? Its a comedy not a porn flick? Ms. Keys, would have to hop from bed to bed. (Naw, let's be real here,) For Ms. Keys to make her role as Dream Hampton believeable, in each scene she would have to go into office after office, stand up and get on her knees so many times, that her kneecaps would be bruised and her jaw would be permanently locked.
Who would want to go through all that trouble and not get at least a coveted urban women's EIC spot or at least an assistant position who is directly responsible for planning their next apperance at an industry party instead of doing anything that resembles work?
And sorry guys but even Black Male and Ebony are of some entertainment to poeple. With those two, at least you can be sure to get stunningly bright cosmetics, and black "society" pictures. What does Savoy have? Close but no cigar, Still looking for something worse than Savoy. Anthrax?

Yeah, that's right! they do have a pill for Anthrax. Well let's go back to the drawing board.
What's worse than Savoy?
Oh yeah, the E! True Hollywood Story would be good on UBO, but it would have to go into a mini-series on this one, because there are so many screw ups to report. It would just go on and on..... |

yall are killing me with this savoy thread. I saw the vision of Savoy early on and it was a strong concept and the protype produced at Time Inc. was hot. Obviously something got lost in the Vanguard translation. Anyone got any info? |
Savoy wasn't that hot. And I don't think it ever got the the test issue. It was shelved by Time Inc. Magazine Development long before Vanguarde even existed. They shouldn't have even messed with it especially with Roy S. Johnson as EIC. He's never been in total control of any publication before. And it's quite apparent on the pages of Savoy because there's no voice, no flow, and boring and bougie as hell.
When a mulitmillion dollar media conglomerate spends a lot a money developing something and they tell you, "We're not feeling it as it is, we're not going with it" maybe you as the little startup should listen. After all, they did drop some of the biggest magazine phenoms during the same time, seems like they are on point. Check out, In Style, Teen People, and VIBE. |

Well for a point of reference Roy S. Johnson and Kevin Dowdell are the best of friends....
Nuff said...that should explain both Savoy and Volume.com.
Birds of a feather...so the saying goes. |
fuck up together?
Is that the saying?
MEOW! |
Damn. I cant be the only one who didnt even know that Volume.com existed |
I didn't know until I joined UE. As a developer, I was shocked to see them using framesets. That's so 1997!
Blackplanet.com is also stuck in the frames ice-age.
I have a questions for the group...What makes a site "urban"? Does urban mean "black" or does urban mean "inner city"? |
Ooohh Grady,
You dun gone and did it now!
The what is urban discussion has flared up a couple of times on UE. Needless to say there are MANY definitions of urban, depending on your perspective and lifestyle.
Some say its black, others say those living in the upscale-hip areas of big cities still others think inner-city grimy. I think its all these, and some.
And Roy, no you are not the only one who didn't know Volume existed. After hearing about on UE a while back I visited once and NEVER went back. I mean damn, I went to visit UBO at least twice I think, and that site sucked!
|
Volume.com could have taken a lesson on providing content from Urbanexpose, a site which is CONSTANTLY being updated with the latest insider news and info....
New stories every two weeks(!)... how DO they keep that pace? :-) |
Why isn't this site updated more often? I'm not a web developer so perhaps I'm ignorant but does this signal the possible end of this great site? |
I saw the test issue and it was hot -edgy. And the fact that Time Inc. dropped it means nothing: Time Inc. is a racist place, don't forget it. Getting the imprimatur of a major player does not mean a project has merit. |
George,
The pace here is breakneck. I know everytime I check in it takes at least a full minute to catch up.
I said it before, I'll say it again, I'm convinced this is a case study to see how often we'll return to this site. |
celess,
So I "urban" has taken on the role of terms like latin, hispanic or multiracial.
I think future successful ventures will stray away from such a broad demographic and try to target a group that will be a loyal base, willing to spend money on the web. |
Chris I, I wouldn't doubt what you say about Time, Inc. is true. And I wasn't implying that having the backing of a big corp equates good. However, Time Inc, is about cash and if they thought they could make a dime from Savoy it would have got the green light, instead of shelved.
Irregardless of went on in the past, the point is it's HORRIBLE now. And considering the whole industry is tight now magazines shutting down left and right, the big conference couldn't even say things would get better until at least 2003. Why would anyone continue to put bandaids on a bulletwound is beyond me. |
Grady,
It has actually gotten to the point that if you were to ask Salon.com or Slashdot if they are urban, or better yet, urbane, they might say yes.
Depending on who you are talking to (a clothing designer for instance) urban can = upscale white city-dweller.
I agree that next generation Web ventures will have to become more niche targeted but not necessarily along racial lines, but by things like cultural, economic and lifestyle affiliations. Which can sometimes, but not always, equal race.

Okay you guys know I don't usually post stuff like this but someone from Atlantic sent it to me and I found it interesting to say the least....

I am a nobody in the urban world of media and all of you people that are "somebodies" Need to get together and work on the Digital Divide problem because we are following behind as black people and there are other urban people who are passing us in technology advances.

We need to cease all of the negativity and concentrate on trying to get more urban sites before we become extinct before we even get started.
If anyone is interested in trying to do something positive let me know
michelebural@lycos.com
Michele |
We won't become extinct. The business model is just wrong at the moment. And it's wrong for everyone else, not just "urban" sites. Too succeed, I think we need to escape from the word "urban". It's too broad and it's starting to get stale, like essence magazine's overuse of the word "excellence". |
The word urban maybe to broad and overused but what else are we going to call it "Black" sites? |
I think you feel all Blacks can unite on the web, possibly under one website. I don't think this is possible. Too many differences among us (politically, economically, socially...even culturally), which demands that sites target those differences and create services that cater to them. The names of the sites will be based on the services or the brand created to sell the services.
Right now it seems there more effort being put into saying "we're black" than there is in remaining a going concern... |

But, if I'm neither black nor from the inner city, what are you going to label your site to get my attention and, ultimately, my dollar? |

I would hope no one here is prescribing to the WE are BLACK/URBAN and this how BLACK/URBAN people think theory. These sites failed in part because that is precisely what many of the blackwhatever.com sites were doing. These sites received initial funding, mainly because that’s how the mainstream media and advertising people see us - WE all think alike and have the same point of view. WE should know better.
A shitty site is a shitty site, period. If I identify with a site, find the content interesting and engaging, I'm going to visit and participate on it, regardless if I fall into who the site owners felt their intended target audience was or not.
Actually, on the majority of the sites I visit on a consistent basis, the audience consists of people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds, from Harvard MBAs to Libertarians to IT Geeks. The only common thread is that these are real people who use the Web to learn, speak their minds and open their eyes to alternative points of view.
What race they are or how they identify themselves on the next census form is irrelevant.
In order for urban sites to survive they need to take a lesson from a unlikely teacher, the late Notorious BIG. Thats right, the Biggie philosophy: Don’t water down your words, keep it real grimy and authentic, yet so original and of such high quality that the mainstream finds it accessible and has no choice but to recognize the talent and get with it, or be left behind.

I think all those failed urban sites honestly 'tried' to use that 'philosiphy' at one point, but how grimey can you reeealy keep it, when millions of dollars of funding is given to you site, and and you get to eat sushi and drink chai for lunch daily? How grimey can you keep it, when you throw million dollar parities on a island in NYC? ( im still mad at you cuz i aint get a invite..*smile)
For a "urban" (or any) dotcom to survive?..just gotta have a fresh idea, and a very tight focused and creative team, that know how to use their resouces - or lack of ....and to provide sumthing that people want or need.
Sounds simple, to keep it 'grimey'..but aint no one did it ............

ohsokool..we ALL know why you DID NOT get an invite to the Ellis Island party. ;)
Anyway, I got a duel offer in early 1999. One offer to work at UBO and one ot work at Volume.com
The staff at Volume were more skeletal, and I knew that HBO might slow stuff down..anyone remember HBO's "Cafe Digital" or whatever it was called, aimed at HBO's growing urban subscribers, and featured the new urban programming they started to offer.
It was essentially patterned after Cafe Los Negroes...because VMI developed it. In the long run, they site was develped the suits stepped in and the site was wack.
In the end, I didnt chose Volume and chose to work for UBO. I only had a week to decide, but i think the opportunity to work with George Jackson made my final decision.
Being in the game since before funkmaster flex was rockin Starter and before most of you had an email address. I saw it before it was Urban, it was just peeps like me having access to technology and knowing how to do something with it.
Speaking of the Biggie philosophy, I posted something a long time ago in reference to this whole "urban dot com" thing. Read and follow.

Yea, Van and I have alittle history. So I wish him luck... but....
1. paid content for online hip hop. When Mircosoft was going head to head with Salon, even they couldn't get people to pay for content. Consumer Reports, Wall Street Journal, and NYTimes are succesful because it's quality content that you really can't find elsewhere. Hip hop is all over the net, and some really great content.

Anyone paying for internet content, including porn, is a sucker. |
Anyone giving content away for free as in "free beer" is a sucker.
Free content is going to die a slow death in the next two years.
Yahoo is on the ropes.
Salon has less and less for free.
|
Yahoo isn't even a content based site, it's a search engine ( and not a very good one either ) and a collection of barely usable chatrooms. The world wide web started off free, and it will go back to being free or die a slow and painfull death at the hand sof people trying to turn it into the "new" cable television. Peoples plans of becoming millionaires off this shit will come to naught.
Before you even attempt to sell content, you have to have content, which most sites just don't. The days of an internet bursting with content heavy sites ended when suits decided they should "get in on the business" of a business that didn't really exist. The sites with the most and best content are usually the ones not trying to make money off their content but off of a strong integrated commerce plan.
I'm not paying someone to read their review of an album, but I will pay them for the album. Plain and simple. |
I don't see individuals paying for content on the net, it's just not neccessary. Businesses should be the only paying customers of the web.
For most folks the net is about entertainment, and there are already too many free sites for that.

We heard this same argument in the cable industry, no one is going to pay for cable when they got TV for free.
The business that start charging first will be the industry first mover, not the guy that put his site up first.
All it takes is that charging site several months and hundreds of customers to change the entire competitive environment.
For goodness sake, people are paying $1 for a bottle of water!

What up,
This is vansilk writing this message to all of you industry headz out there.I'm using one of my staff members clout here, to speak out to you. his name is Mike Brown and as i read some of these response of what i 'm gonna do with a online magazine is fantastic to hear views of how it might work and not work. That what life and business is all about.OPINIONS.
But we need to have out own and HIPHOP has been in my heart sine 1974.I'm doing this because it time for a change,no matter how how it may take. After my mother death this past March 19th, life is very short. As for me the music industry has it flaws which i'm not gonna get into, but if any one know me they know how i rolled and how i been black ball all these years because of the rumors and my so call mob connection.Wo cares but after all these years they still hate.HATERS DON'T LIVER LONG.I have no reason to express my past life outside of HIPHOP,working for RICHARD DEBi (gambino family) is no one concern. But BLACK MAFIA tells me that alot of peeps here use asume names to get there point out and across, i can understand because of fear of losing your jobs or not getting one.I have always been solo and had my own so there is no reason to hate, and the no buzz seems like that the place to be.But for serious peeps you can get at me personally at my e mail address vansilk@aol.com,or call me 443 254 1307, i value all views of what people think

|
At some point you have to charge for some content on a site. It cost money to run a business and if people want it free let them go somewhere else. I'm with 30rotten. One paid subscriber is worth more that 100 non-payer browsers. There are millions of people on the interet. All it takes is a couple of thousand that believe in the direction of your site to make it a success. The critical aspect is having the funds to build the business at same time you build your client base. |

in case you haven't heard the news, Yahoo will start agressively charging for their services. That means you have to pay to reply to a personals (which is not a bad ideal) and access other services they once offered for free.
I believe 2002 will split the web world into two kind of businesses: those that accommodate freeloaders and those that accomodate paying customers. I already have my bets on who will prevail and who will be left behind....
Pick your side........ |
I think that a subscription based online hip-hop magazine CAN work if done properly. VAN SILK has been in the game long enough, and seen enough bullshit to know the do's and dont's of hip hop business. As far as people criticizing him for doing it so that "we can have our own", what's wrong with that? If you're not interested, fine. If you are, you'll subsribe. My god, there are people, (myself included) that pay $4.95 a month to subsribe to ESPN INSIDER on the ESPN.COM website. I'm a sports fan so I do it. I'm a hip-hop fan, so I'll do this too. I see absolutely, NOTHING wrong with Str8hiphop.com, being a paid format. Let him do his thing. The thing that REALLY pisses me off though, is that fact that if you go to THE SOURCE's site, they have some shit up there that looks almost EXACTLY like the screen for HIPHOP25.COM that goes to the STR8HIPHOP.COM advertisement. Since when does The Source sign up people for a newsletter. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! I thought that biting was a crime in hip-hop. Peace and Love. |

The Source has ALWAYS had a mailing list (on their site) as do most sites on the net. It's not biting, it's business.
And as far as the pop-up asking for users to sign up while the sites is being overhauled is standard as well. Every one from 360HipHop to Volume has done that......

Last I heard Hookts/Platform servers were in the offices of Bla-Bla..so it possible someone tripped over some cat5 and disconnected them.
The japanese version of Platform was up until recently.
SOHH is still around and always will be.
UBO is coming out of bankruptcy..hmmm....

I think it is hard to have a fashion magazine. Look at Code, everyone thought it was gay and with King, everyone look like they may have been in prision on the downlow. There is still clear confusion with Black and Urban......
I'll give them a better shot than savoy. I think these people need to sit down and say is they going to go the corny scripted route or reach inside themselves and say this is what they want to see. I don't want to see hard-ass looking niggas in a magazine....that prison gay shit....
I can care less for the women featured in these magazines. None of these mags and uppity photographers is going to show sisters in the urban world the way we brothers really like to see them (please don't play dumb with me) so the current ''flesh factor" will never appeal to me.... |

"DOWNTOWN 81 WEEKEND: A Tribute to Jean Michel Basquiat"
1980's Avant Garde New York. Millennium Neo-Renaissance
Washington, DC. Experience the meeting of these two worlds as Various
Innovative Projects and Contexture present "DOWNTOWN 81 WEEKEND: A
Tribute to Jean Michel Basquiat". Join us as we celebrate the life
and work of the legendary Haitian-American Artist by presenting his
feature film debut, DOWNTOWN 81. Then, witness his legacy through the
works of DC's artistic community!
Jean Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was a 19-year-old painter,
graffiti artist, poet and musician when he played the lead in this
film, which vividly depicts the explosive downtown New York art and
music scene of 1980-81. Basquiat was an important figure on that
scene. He had yet to have his first exhibition. But his paintings and
words were part of the city landscape. Today, his paintings hang in
museums and important collections around the world and he is
internationally recognized as one of the most important artists of
the late twentieth century.
The film is a day in the life of a young artist who needs to
raise money to reclaim the apartment from which he has been evicted.
He wanders the downtown streets carrying a painting he hopes to sell,
encountering friends, whose lives (and performances) we peek into. He
finally manages to sell his painting to a wealthy female admirer, but
he's paid by check. Low on cash, he spends the evening wandering from
club to club, looking for a beautiful girl he had met earlier, so
he'll have a place to spend the night. Basquiat is a natural actor -
witty, radiant, the epitome of coolness and artistic exuberance. The
cast includes Deborah Harry, Fab Five Freddy (Yo! MTV Raps) and
leading bands of the era including Kid Creole and the Coconuts, James
White and the Blacks, DNA, Tuxedo Moon, the Plastics, and Walter
Steding and the Dragon People. DOWNTOWN 81 not only captures one of
the most interesting and lively artists of the twentieth century as
he is poised for fame, but it is a slice of life from one of the most
exciting periods in American culture, with the emergence of new wave
music, new painting, hip hop and graffiti.
There will be 3 days of screenings, from 12/6-12/8. Before
and after the screenings will be various presentations and
performances, giving you a taste of the eclectic world Basquiat was a
part of. Thursday, December 6th is not only the start of the whole
affair, but is the kick-off date for "Neosoulevents.com", a weekly
showcase of multimedia expressions thru live music, poetry, and
video. Your regular dose of art will be accentuated by rare grooves
provided by notable DC DJ Munch, and acting as your hosts will be
Todd B of WPGC (95.5 FM), Gloria "Globot" Nauden (Radar
Entertainment) and Jean Michel Basquiat himself - made manifest
through W. Ellington Felton.
Far from an exaggeration, W. Ellington Felton is the closest
reincarnation of the late artist DC has. A creative jack-of-all-
trades, Felton has made a name for himself in the Metropolitan Area
and beyond as an actor, vocalist, Hip-Hop artist, DJ and spoken word
poet. Currently a full-time actor at the Area Stage, W. has also
launched Art Hurts! A multimedia production company that currently
consists of a record label and clothing line. The apparel consists of
one-of-a-kind articles of clothing, the designs derived from the
imagery of paintings and words. As well, the Art Hurts! musical
productions are "Dub Ell's" (one of his many nom de plumes) attempt
to "paint pictures w/ music" and providing something new on a regular
basis. Having set the goal of releasing a new album every 3 months,
Felton has so far succeeded, having already released "Art Hurts!" and
just recently, "Soul Sonnets" both achieving critical acclaim and
impressive sales. In fact, he's already planning his next trip back
to the studio for his third project, scheduled to be released early
next year.
In the meantime, On Friday, December 7th, Dub returns, with
band in tow, to host and perform at "Downtown 81-Uptown 01", a one-
night presentation of local artists and their projects. Included will
be a second screening of Downtown 81, a mini-gallery of visual works
and a screening of the trailer for "Piece of Mind", a short film
written and directed by DC filmmakers Kobie Nichols and ayo,
scheduled for release April 2002. Ending the night will be an 80's
Hip-Hop/ New Wave Rock after party, bringing Munch back for an encore
set. And speaking of encores, for those who miss the festivities,
or would rather watch the film minus all of the added excitement,
there will be an encore matinee screening on Saturday, December
8th .
All of the events will take place at Mangos, DC's premiere
venue for live music, open-mike poetry and Caribbean Fusion Cuisine.
Mangos is located at 2017 14th St. NW, along the historical U St.
Corridor. Parking is available next door.
Come and pay tribute to a man, a movement and a legacy!

"cars, money, cash and hoes/thugs "
Well the issue with Leila Archer on the cover definatly has plenty of that. Suge Knight, Claudia Jordan,Carla Maria, and various articles on gadgets, cars and bikes. I dont think KING is intended to be fashion mag tho'..just simply trynna ride the wave of Maxim, Stuff & FHM, (all of which have been popular in the UK for many years before launching in the US) 2-3 years after people of color finally caught on.
I cant call it, nor will I..but working @ Maxim for a year and change, I can see the obvious simularities in content...and not just the design.
Whether it flys with the "urban male" /"black male" market..remains to be seen.
Im gonna peeps the first few months/issues tho... |
"cars, money, cash and hoes/thugs "
Now that would be some funny shit - a magazine with pictures of money in it. Sittin around like "damn, I wish I had that money". I don't think it gets any more pathetic than that.
That's even worse that having a website that' disappears every other week and never gets updated (hint, hint) |

What the blue blazes is wrong with this site? did it run out of money? are the founders no longer living? HOW come nobody updates this joint? IF its defunct just take it down for goodness sake. If not update it. But don't tease us by keeping the url up! |
It's so sad. I'm so into this site I visit it regularly hoping SOMEBODY will post a new article. A thread on Parson's new job, the Michael Jackson TV special, anything.
How could somebody throw away this kind of loyal and sophisticated fan base? |

fuck it, I give up......
dilemna, how is blacktrade doing? Anyone got a site like this and want my participation, just let me know..I have a lot of stuff I want to post
this is a great ideal, a great format and the user-submitted content is what kept it going for a while. But I cannot be loyal more than the webmaster, that's not cool... |
This is very true. And very pathetic. Time for folks to step up and create something new. I know I plan to....
|
KING magazine is kinda weak for my taste in terms of editorial content, but the flicks are aiight. Personally, I would choose House of Roses if given the choice of 'hand' material. UE, what's going on with the updates and new postings? Two months and counting...someone needs to hire a content editor, or holler at a freelancer that can get it done with minimal input/maximum output.
I long for the days of drama and excitement on UE --- before the bubble burst and some of you had to go and get real jobs, since Foozeball Champion hasn't been embraced by the mainstream job market as a legitimate discipline.
And what's the deal with my 'clout'? I've been on this board ripping and repping for the longest and can't even get my 'props'. Not cool, ma'.
|
Hey hey hey now...Volume did have its strong points. I snatched a halfway decent background for my page from Volume. |
...and Tom you ain't EVEN right. |
Ed,
Blacktrade is not really mine, but I;ve just redesigned www.360Urban.com. We are about to promote it so post away... Just remember until we start promoting it it probably won't be that much more live than this place... nahhh... not that bad... lol |

Dilema32,
Thanks I'll check it out soon. Too many issues like Sahara Communications and Morgan State tripping on people hairstyles and Jay-Z dissing everyone to be worried about who Scott Mills is screwing or non-financial-worthy 1998-style news like how many pageviews Blackplanet got the other day or some magazine editor that makes a shitty salary compared to NYC cost of living. That means nothing when the economy is in the gutter. Actually, I'm happy because this wipes out all the BS and allow the real people with talent to enter the game |
Since this site is pretty dead a shameless plug won't hurt...
Check out the relaunched 360Urban
www.360Urban.com
let's continue the discussions... |
Starting the clout over once again...
According to F'd Company, Rawkus is dead and will be absorbed into MCA, I believe.
I haven't heard it from any other sources yet. |
no way. come on, santa. i've seen a lot worse things said on these boards than what I said. all I asked was WHY? the only remotely mean thing I said was "large plastic breasts" and that's my politically incorrect way of saying "implants." I don't think I said anything negative. What I said was, just by looking at her, she seems like any other dancer. I wanted to know what set her apart from the rest that you guys are making special trips. Cut me some slack, I wasn't ripping her at all. Just looking for something to justify those statements. Ease up, santa. |
excuse me, wrong message board.
Now here's what I meant to post:
From fuckedcompany.com"
Raise some Rawkus
Rumore has it Rawkus Records, the largest underground hip-hop label in America, has canned its entire staff and is being absored by MCA Records. Their site is down as of this writing.
When: 12/17/2001
Company: Rawkus Records
Severity: 50
Points: 150
Many of the posts on that message board confirm it as well. |
I've been a silent observer for some time now and I've always enjoyed the views thrown around on UE. I'm really disappointed to see things slow so.
Saying that, it seems like a pretty good time to get involved in the online community game myself.
So when you get a sec, drop by www.urbandour.com and check things out.
Much appreciated.

I wonder if its the fact that Ruper Murdoch's son was the chief finacier behind Rawkus Records is the reason for it closing.
They shamed Danny Hock on the "Jails, Hospitals, and HipHop" which is why the distribution was limited. Hmmm.... |

UrbanDour.com is tight! This is the type of shit we need to do and see...I'm glad the bullshit black sites like NetNoir and self-hyped BlackWebPortal are quickly becoming passe' as these new generation urban webmasters come up...
Fuck walking around trying to get your face in new economy magazines and money from somebody to fund your shit, build up a community and keep it real. People will pay for your shit, if they feel you...just ask Wouncie....
I'm glad I took a break during this Blackplanet vs BET 200,000 non-paying unique visitors era or get a million niggers to attract advertisers to pay for my web site schemes..
These new slashdot-style community participation by small niche brothers and sisters is what I knew will be the real urban online experience.
you go urbandour!
|
I claim this vacant expanse of space as the property of Trick Turner! UE is now mine! Who dares challenge me? |
Truck,
Don't make me have to weigh that load you think your hauling aiight. Just play nice and get along and everything will be everything. For those of you checking the post meter and feigning for anything remotely new on this black hole listen to me rant.
Can we just get one damn issue of the SOURCE without a Benzino ad, photo or mention?
Isn't it just a little suspicious that J.J. Evans (Shawn Carter, Jay-Z, Jigga, Hova, William H...) suddenly buys gifts for the hood, after Nas makes the valid point that all he's been selling is lies to ruin lives for years. I remember when this 'tough guy' was hemmed up by my boy in Eli Whitney H.S. and we chased them home and had his boy running down the tracks at Hoyt and Schermehorn. Marcy dudes use to be scarred to come through B'WAY Junction or the mall downtown, and now this clown is a tough guy. Puhleeze! "J. J. Evans, get gunned up and clapped quick".
