A Source Of A Different Colour
|
 |
TheSource Entertainment Media Empire is currently being sued by American Express for 1.8 Million dollars. They have cut off David Mays and his executives’ corporate cards. It’s a huge debt for a company currently shopping itself on the open market, counting among its assets: a widely circulated magazine, a top rated awards show, and two cheaply produced and tenuously distributed TV shows on the African Heritage Network.
TheSource’s two TV shows are produced and then distributed through the African Heritage Network (AHN), which has several blocks of airtime in several urban markets to show African-American related programming as a public service donated by broadcast networks. They normally would show Cornbread, Earl and Me, the Martin Luther King teleplay, or maybe Tony Brown’s Journal where instead of talking about issues Tony hawks pre-paid legal cards, his biography about his nose and miracle soap that lasts forever.

No Worries. David Mays has given executives secure Capital One cards to replace the lost American Express cards. It’s not the same as dropping a black card on the table, but one could argue that rustic scenes with embossed cornucopias is sexy too.

Interesting perspective. Clear, short, yet definitive. |
I like the way they spelled "colour". |
Very "Euro" of them to spell it that way.
This site is jacked up. First, I lost my account and all my clout. I had to re-register under a new name. However, when I log-in from the homepage and click on this article, it tells me I'm not a registered user.
And, has anyone else noticed how this site goes down like clockwork around 11PM ET?
This is a classic example of fine Urban excellence. Basic, unsupported, with a mild hint of frustration... |
This site's administrative management is almost as well run as BET on a good day.

But back to this in-depth article...I especially enjoy piss-yellow tint applied to the subject's face. Maybe this article should be called "Colour From a Different Source". Hmmm? |
TOP TEN REASONS NOT TO READ THE SOURCE ANYMORE
1) David Mays. lets face it a white boy making millions running a Hip-Hop magazine is akin to ODB serving as CEO of a successful country mag called "OINK!"
2) Almighty RSO. Made Men. Benzino. Whatever. Will these cats ever just give it a rest? No matter how many times these cats change their moniker or run up into David Mays office & beat him to a stinking pulp, or "sneak" in extra mics for themselves in the Record Report section or get an average of 10 "unpaid" ads in every Sauce issue or somehow drug the likes of Teddy Riley into doing a song with them, these corny-ass, still rocking yellow & Black tees, wannabee thugs will NEVER, EVER get ANYONE to put down their hard-earned funds on their absolute waste of product. But they shouldnt be too mad as their legacy will forever have a place in 99-cent bins worldwide.
3) XXL
4) Bad writers and even worse writing. Take a look at The Source masthead and compare it to say.....3 years ago and you'll see that the talent at 215 Park Avenue South has definitely become something of a relic.
5) Carlito Rodriquez. Word has it that this cat has been at the Source forever and a day now, has like 10 kids and got his due from writing some scrub piece and sending it to them in-between washing toilet bowls at Rikers some years ago. Anyway, who cares? I just know that if I read one more "Editorial" with more "unowhaI'msayin'"'s then DMX on acid, I'm gonna go jump off a bridge and ole Carlito is coming right along with me.
6) Master P and P. Diddy covers. Am I the only one who remembers how obsessed with putting Tupac and Biggie on their covers that gay mag Vibe was a few years back? Well, at least Vibe sold some extra copies when they did it. And next time Carlito lets Mr. Mays (oops, i meant to say Made Men) pick the cover, someone really needs to take him out back and shoot him in his goya beans.
7) Record Report. The reviews have become so awful and formulaic that one really shouldnt even bother reading them. And the passing out of the mics are even worse. I mean, c'mon Beanie Sigel's "The Reason" getting 4 mics while Cormega's "The Realness" gets only 3-and-half? Even Ms. Cleo runs a better scam then that.
8) Waaaaaaaaaaay too many ads......yeah we know that the bills need to be paid (esp. when you're literally living phat on Park Ave.), but I cant be the only one who needs to pull out the ole telescope in order to find an actual (good) article.
9) What exactly ever did happen to Source Sports? I actually kinda liked that rag.
10) Damn idiots still wont return my phone calls!!!.....fucking herbs always thinking they the shit! |
Why? Why? Why? Did the Source and Vibe practically have the same damn cover? And what's with DMX's cocked head? And did the source think the illustrated picture would fool the likes of Smurfie? Can't get nuttin' by me. Hmph! |

Why can't he just go sit down somewhere and shut the fuck up finally? Somebody please tell me. |
It seems like its been a giant flood of white kids running to write, DJ and an give other view points on our culture, when they only know the mtv (viacom) version of the story and what they read in the Source that last 10 years (and we know about them). Cant let it happen people. Am I lying? |

There is definitely a lack of writers who know what the fuck they're talking about, but when you start talking about DJ's, etc. who are white (I assume you mean anyone who's not black), you need to remember Q-bert and all the others, asian, chicano, etc. that are taking DJing and breaking and such to whole other levels.
The attitude that everyone needs to meet your qualifications in order to be able to have anything valuable to add to hip hop culture is the same kind of stuff that still divides the jazz world today.
I hate to tell you, but it's not "our culture" anymore - turn on the tv and see.

payolacrusher,
I do know what you mean - and being a little on the light-skinned side myself (okay, a lot) growing up living Hip Hop I've had to watch white kids (back in the day) go from detesting me to thinking that we're all of a sudden best friends because they (finally) went out and bought Beastie Boys cd's in '86.
The younger caucasian self-proclaimed headz read a LOT of books and buy a LOT of cd's, and they are still the first to deny the roots of Hip Hop culture when discussions are brought up. They want to 'school' you on the forefathers, yet won't acknowledge that Hip Hop is and started as Black music. Who listens to it is not as important as who created it, imho.
There are exceptions - but the majority who try and 'report' on Hip Hop are drawing from shallow pools of knowledge they base far too much on stereotypes of Black people - probably why they still feel some sort of twisted superiority when they announce 'I'm a white boy and I love Hip Hop'.... like they want a cookie. It also pisses me off when they are constantly trying to seek out the 'gangsta' in Black men - because that's the type of music they buy. Conscious lyrics intrigue them, but it's too much for them to conceptualize that a rapper could have a higher IQ than they do.
These same kids are on message boards stressing over pro-black lyrics - because they see them as anti-white - calling Black people racist, when it is an impossibility. They oooh and aaaah over dead prez lyrics, but never knew about X-Clan or Poor Righteous Teachers. Yet if you go to a dead prez show you'll see the white boys with their hands held high - 'I'm an African!'. I just never could understand it. lol
These are the same kids who are mad because they don't understand how many Black people don't share their cumbaya feelings about the nation right now.
Hell, I got stories for days.
It doesn't have to be a 'race' issue, but it is definitely a culture-vulture issue. |

Dove,
You make a great point. But it's speaks on a yet undefined issue in my opionion - Is there a difference between Rap and Hip Hop? If so, what is it and who are the rappers vs. the hip hop artists?
|
white boys just are jumping on the bandwagon of hip hop... they are not down for the cause at the end of the day... |
The difference betwen HIPHOP and RAP ,is that HIPHOP IS REP BY 5 lelements which has nothing to do with the music industry, all that come out of hiphop is rap.
Rap is one elements of the culture which is 30 years old,so for all those who proclaim that it hiphop, they are wrong. |
Okay...
So rap is 1 of 5.
What are the other 4 elements? And...who are the Hip Hop artists today versus Rappers? Certainly, KRS-1 is a Hip Hop artist (although some of his songs have strayed away), but what about Eminem or this new white boy, Bubba Sparxxx?
Until someone (with credibility) draws a line in the sand, by which you can distinguish Hip Hop from Rap, this argument, name calling and hating will continue... |

Why? Because I feel alot of the people up here making comments about this so called "culture" are just as guilty of letting Hot97, The Source, BET & MTV shape their view of what is and isn't going on within the "culture." Beyond arguing about hip-hop's Blackness, wanna-be journalists, who is on what magazine's cover or who was drinking what at such and such party last night do you really care? Do you listen to the music? Do you participate in the culture?
If you don't then you're no more qualified to bitch about hip-hop than most of the people working at The Source are to write about it. |

As far as participating, if you mean going to the shows, supporting the emcee, deejay and b-boy battles, and so forth - then yep. I started out as a b-girl, but I'm a little past my prime in that capacity.
As for the 'shaping' thing, I didn't learn about Hip Hop from tv or magazines - only from clubs, music and the people who brought it to me. |

"To ad to the discussion, we basically let the jews take our culture point blank"
What the fuck, we let the jews take our culture. Where was black labels like Motown when hip hop was in its infacy. Black labels dismissed hip hop as a fad where the jews were ready to put money up in what they recognized as a potential cash cow when the black entertainment elite turned its back on ghetto culture and hoped it would go away. Dont blame some enterprising jewish entrepnuers on the shortsightedness of black people. Look at the past posts on what is real hip hop vs fake hip hop. Who really gives a damm, The rap industry is a business and the bottom line is who bringing in the money. |
Corporate,
"Black labels dismissed hip hop as a fad where the jews were ready to put money up in what they recognized as a potential cash cow when the black entertainment elite turned its back on ghetto culture and hoped it would go away."
Hip Hop was started and nurtured by black businesses, remember Sugarhill Records? The major record companies got involved AFTER they realized the amounts of money involved and where they could take it.
But, I bet they never envisioned "Wiggers" |
Got a question to ask which is off topic: Does anyone know whether or not SOHH.com is having big problems? They've been down for two straight days now. Anyone out there know what's the haps? |
"Got a question to ask which is off topic: Does anyone know whether or not SOHH.com is having big problems? They've been down for two straight days now. Anyone out there know what's the haps? "
I noticed the same thing. but now that i think about it, is losing sohh really a lost?
They was always late with the news. And when it was news, they talked about it like it was a big deal with stupid headlines like "lil bad azz readies new album". and those stupid listening parties featuring lil troy.(or was it pastor troy?) either way it was getting wack and of the 100 threads on the message boards, 95 of them was about jay-z.the other 5 was just a bunch of cornballs who argued with each other all day and felt like they was hard because they was talking tough behind a computer.
A better question is "is this site having some big problems?" i've lost my clout. my name and i had to register twice. what the hell is going on? |
Well, it would be a shame to see SOHH.com go down since it's done so much to promote hip hop on the Web over the last, what, five years now?
"A better question is 'is [UrbanExpose.com] having some big problems?' i've lost my clout. my name and i had to register twice. what the hell is going on?"
Yeah, so did I. I just had to re-register actually. Lost all my clout...not that I care. The only clout I care about is my clout in the real world, not on this site. Maybe Nimda took a bite out of their database? |
At one time really liked SOHH, but then when I got to reach out to them, I noticed that their seemed as if to lie a ego behind that overall entity.
From that point onward I was disappointed with their vibe and their award show that featured a bunch of fake ass nominations.
I'm a real hip-hop head here, and that will never change and at the same time I feel that it's peeps like myself who help in keep the integrity and authenticity of hip-hop alive.
People who know me, know me well and indeed I don''t front when it comes to hip-hop culture.
Contribution and our culture's reputation comes first.
Friends and relationship comes second.
And financial gain just has to naturally fall in place after all responsibilities to the culture and managed first. Nort the other way around.
Indeed I love hip-hop and if many peeps knew who I was and what I have going on on the internet they would give mad daps, but that is not my concern.
I love to create in the background and in the darkness then allow it to feel the impact of light.
Peace...... |
I never had a problem with the people behind SOHH. Felicia always gave me big respect whenever I corresponded or met with her and she always went to bat for me and the artists whose sites I maintain(ed) and needed promotion on SOHH. My experiences with her were nothing but positive.
Their awards show? Well, I'm one who believes that you shouldn't open the nominating and voting open to the general public, but then again, the sites of mine which were nominated never won. If I had, I'd probably be singing a different tune.
Check out my latest project if you're interested. It's an overhaul job:

Police Investigating Rapper's Fall
PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Rapper Erick Sermon was critically injured when he plunged from a third-story window, which Paterson police said Tuesday they are investigating as a suicide attempt.
The police account contradicts the story from the artist's record label that Sermon, 32, was injured in a car crash on a rain-slicked road.
Police said they were called Sept. 25 on a report of an attempted suicide. They were unable to interview Sermon, who is being treated for head and facial injuries at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
But a woman told police the rapper had been in her apartment. She left briefly and returned to find him gone and a window open. The woman, whom police did not identify, said she looked out the window and saw Sermon lying on his back in the parking lot, bleeding from the head.
Sermon, who lives in Ronkonkoma, N.Y., was listed in fair condition Tuesday.
Biff Warren, a publicist for his label, J Records, initially told The Associated Press that Sermon was heading home after finishing a video shoot in upstate New York when he fell asleep at the wheel and ran into a wall.
Another record label publicist, Yusef Gomez, told The Record of Hackensack for Tuesday's editions that he does not know where the original information came from.
``As far as we knew and what was sent to us, he was in a car accident,'' he said.
Representatives for J Records did not immediately return calls seeking comment from The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Sermon got his start in the late '80s as part of the duo EPMD. His new album is scheduled for release on Nov. 30.

Mr. Bozack ,
The site looks great,,,
Sites like this always make me want to overhaul the Rapsheet site. Which I will for 2002..
Anyway are u the original owner of the domain name? I used to correspond with that cat when I was doing hiphopnow... |
Dilema: Thanks for checking out the new HipHopHeadz.com and showing love on the board. The site is not owned anymore by its previous owners. A company named Mayfair Web Channels from down in Antigua hired me to handle production of the site (graphic design, Flash production and back-end). Other than encoding the music files for the site, I'm not handling any of the maintenance of the site's content, so if the news stories are old, that isn't anyone's fault other than the client. I built the thing to be stupid-easy to maintain while putting in as little work as possible to update the content; and I'm very proud of the back-end admin server that goes along with the public site. You can really update a days worth of content within a short period of time...that is as long as you don't put it off and get behind, which the client has a tendency to do. And that shit gets mad-frustrating.
And hey...if you liked what I did visually for HipHopHeadz, you should hollar at me to discuss what it would cost for me to re-design RapSheet.com for you. I don't know if you visited my Broader Than Broadway site to see what else I've done, but if you did, you'd have noticed that my office's address is in the T-Dot, and what that means for you as an American is great exchange on your dollar for my high quality services as well as no taxes collected (thanks to N.A.F.T.A.) Holla at me if you're interested in discussing the possibilities for RapSheet.com and much respect for the complements. Peace. |

Thanks for the offer but my skills have improved considerably since the Rap Sheet site was first created. Originally, I was going to be updating it either so I created a backend that allows them to easily update as well. My job now is to outdo what you did with hiphopheadz, in much the same way rappers try to out=do each other on their albums. You've inspired me, which none of the other hip hop sites have done. Next year, I;ll take it to the next level... |
Well okay...can't wait to see it. Definitely let me know when it's up so I don't miss it. Your only problem is, I'm planning to out-do myself on my latest client's piece, so if you're out to stay a step ahead of me, shoot for two steps ahead just to be safe ;)
Have a good weekend. |

your slipping crispus!!! |
Here's an interesting profile of David Mays. In a way, it seems like he has a complex (ex: the picture of him next to the boxing bag? C'mon.)
Is the Source in trouble?

it's a wonder the tv shows are still on the air... didn't frank mercado-valdez (African Heritage Network) go to jail behind some tax evasion drama? |
With all the ads they run you'd imagine it'd only be a matter of time before they found a way out before the bill collectors started calling. |
The head that these kids have is atrocious when it comes to money. Funny worked for years, denied and come from "old school" "I worked to hard for my money to pay extra on the bill." A dollar for a dollar, not credit for the dollar. And the way of enterprising America, the lavish and extravagrant lifestyle was and is poor exhibit of outfront showing, and behind repossessing, and as hip-hop, roughneck and thuggish as Source is you aren't as slick in not paying back as image show and to think I was high-praising for the good work this year show did and trying not to miss the Source tv shows. Too bad that is jeopardize over bad credit, here's to the future-spend now bad credit later. |
at least that Source All Access show isn't half bad...
they must lock Benzino and Made Men out of the production meetings... |
