360HipHop.com Threatens a 187 On Competition

Reaching the bottom of the domain name barrel, Russell Simmons will launch "THE number one destination for hip-hop culture on the Internet" at 360HipHop.com. And we thought 5% nation street jargon went out with the 90's.
Simmons had to scrap rs1w.com because the "One World" brand is synonymous with failure. First, there was the ailed One World magazine that made Benetton "Colors" look like hard-hitting journalism. Then, there was the abysmal Russell Simmons One World TV show, which could have used a Dee Barnes punch in the face to make it more interesting. With a new moniker, Simmons is anxious to emerge triumphant the web. Hip-hop fans, however, are about as eager for the new 360hiphop.com site as they are for the next issue of Blaze magazine.
Simmons told The Industry Standard, "We're gonna murder everyone out there". Please! Stop the violence in new media. Maybe he meant murdering investor's portfolios? Noting a matured Internet landscape and the demise of many content plays; 360HipHop has already cut 75% of its expenses and brought in partners to defray costs. It's not like Russell doesn't have the dough to bankroll it by himself, but its only fun to lose money with friends. 360HipHop.com milked a few million from Will Smith and Tyra Banks.
Back on the Phat Farm, 360HipHop.com faces tough odds and even tougher competition. But Russell Simmons seems determined to create success. Perhaps his site will beat rivals with its unique features such as 'Keystylin' where users can trade rhymes in real-time. We thought that was called 'chat'. There will also be a 'Virtual Subway Car' filled with virtual advertisements. Does this mean that Doctor Zizmor might be a silent partner? At least Stan Lathan is involved; maybe we can see some of that cutting edge WB humor found on such shows he directed like "Cleghorne!" or Steve Harvey's hairpiece.

So what is really the deal? Is it that, in the year 2000, we have nothing better to do than to discredit our own? Russell is a visionary and yes, human. He is not void of blemish but he still sparkles. Hell, Russell shines- and has far more success than failures.
360hiphop.com is another success. Is money on crack? Has this writer seen the blaze that 360 is offering? Of course, he hasn't. If so, he'd know that the "virtual train ride" is not a ride at all but a.... well you'll have to wait for the 20th to see for yourself.
360 is something that none of you have ever expected and will be to the internet as a movie is to that tired napkin you scribbled your notes on to write your piece. All I can say is that Russell and everyone over here wins. We win because we aren't flossing and wasting money on frivolous parties for haters like you to come & eat off Russell's dough and then talk behind his back. I give 360 props for getting their content together so quickly, their editorial "dream team" and Big Russ behind them, BUT (and a BIG BUT) can they make content for the web?
In a world where the majority of net users surf high-bandwith at work, what about those low-bandwith users?
And where is their community? I watched as 88Hip-Hop took a long and tedious route in building a loyal community...and that was when they had NO comp!
I don't even want to comment on eCommerce.
Cool concept, cool graphics but content isn't that engaging, and I can see how a user would get bored quick with the same flashy interface, animation and games (i.e. Hookt.com) if they don't update the content quick enough.

I thought I'd drop my 2 cents, since that's what it seems this is for.
I'm very anxious to see if 360 can live up to all the hype. Russell is the master of hype, but it works very differently in the Internet game. I think it is safe to say he has his work cut out for him. Having the hottest looking site will get him the first look, but if they can't back it up with consistent entertaining content, forget it. And overdoing the Flash/high-tech components of the site will only hurt them. Look at Boo.com and Hookt.com.
Hookt.com has done a great job of showing the industry what NOT to do. As has UBO. Let's hope 360 does a little better, for the sake of "urban." I was at a launch party of a new "urban" site, www.onelevel.com, and have checked it out since. This site is simple, but has fun content. I don't know if they're going anywhere, but I know what they got now is from barely any cash. Let's hope this represents for "urban" a little better.
Don't take my comments about Hookt and UBO as hating, I'm just trying to provide constructive criticism. The business judgements these companies have shown is absurd. I recently visited the UBO offices...what the hell do they have all those people for? The way I figure, they could get by on a third of their current staff.
Either way, someone is going to win, let's hope its the best representation for urban or hip hop or whatever the hell the current buzzword is.

My fucking name keeps popping up in reference to this site and I wanna know what the fucking deal is: I worked for UBO, had a good experience then left;Isigned on at 360, did my best and encountered a beef-smoking pothead who got me laid off for no reason. Since then, I went over to MTV for a few weeks. I haven't been dissing anyone, and don't intend to (with the exception of that one dicksucking faggit at 360). Why is my name popping up in connection with this site? or any disses against websites? If people bite my style, that's natural-- it's been happening for nine years now. Don't assume it's me. I'm away from the Internet field and happy to be away from it. I wish everyone well and hope everyone can win.

I wish everyone the best and hope God will judge each and every one of them according to their works.
It's funny that I'd be blamed because
I read this article (to the left) and see that whoever authored it did a pretty good job of mimicking the Have Gun Will Travel style-- but the word 'ailed' strikes me as being used of context. Moreover, I have nothing but respect for Mr. Simmons. If I were to seriously attack anyone, it would probably be certain people at MTV.Com. And I wouldn't even know what the WB's Cleghorne is. Ask me about Chow Yun-fat's HK work and we'll talk. For what it's worth: this could be a great forum for news if people would attach honest bylines to their work. They tried to make a lot of promises and suckered investors into giving money but have delivered nothing more than their shitty Latin site and the garbage Indieplanet. I think the webmasters should erase all of the negative comments and start over. This isn't what this site was meant to be about. It's become a way for people to call each other names. It all started with Laila Galoul calling people names because she was fired. That made other people insult each other, and it is sad because Rhonda froim 360 made comments that were in poor taste and then Dream Hampton got into it as Scared Rabbit (unless S.R. is a default name for the computer at Urban Box Office). Ok, allow someone who knows the web business from way back to educate some of you. Although it sucks, and the staff is full of people that could never get hired elsewhere (a la nitro, dream hampton, etc.) UBO will win because it's owned by white men. If you don't know this, do your research. Why is their race important? As The Source proved, any white man can enter the black man's game and beat him because black people hate on black peole more than anyone else.
Russell will Sell 360hiphop to some white company like he did defjam, because he's only a hustler and you shouldn't expect more from him. Selwyn will eventually be fired or quit because, although he's a nice guy, he just doesn't have any backbone, and Russell runs right over people like that. Kris Ex is not even talented enough or experienced enough to be relevant. Sheena will do what she has to do to feed her kids.
Hookt will fail, or be acquired. Bet.com (as much as you may hate it) isn't going anywhere. The owner has the blessing of the white man (exp. the head of Bet was recently given, at cheap price, an entire airline.) That's their boy (as in stepandfetchit).
Volume is a Time Warner property, so it will most likely be dissolved at some point. Time Warner has never committed any serious resources to the black market. They won't start now just because the Hot Boys' hoopin' and hollerin' is selling millions.
TheSource.com will be folded into a major media entity like TimeWarner or Fox because dave mays has never believed in the internet and wants someone else to pay for his entry. Therefore, The Source will probably secure the number one or two spot. Also, the company is now wholely owned by a white jewish man. They will not let him fail.
Aka.com is a hustle, so it will fold quietly, or be folded into another company. Sony has not shown a serious committment to the project.
platform.net will be acquired. soon.
y2g.com. Well, since Fubu is actually owned by a consortium of korean and jewish business men, expect y2g to be around for a while in one form or another. Most likely as a pure ecommerce play designed to exploit the Fubu brand.
john shector & stretch armstrong's rapnetwork.com is too little too late. But, because they are both young white jewish guys, don't bet completely against them. Some old jewish money might decide to make their project legit.

I disagree with "experienced industry professional" about BET.com NOT going anywhere.
Although I don't think it will totally disappear, it definitely WON'T make a significant impact despite the clout it (once) displayed. Now that Bob ain't rolling with Bill Gates (MSFT) anymore, he doesn't have the ONLINE credibility needed to acquire new partnerships, nor does he have the compelling content to keep an ONLINE audience (Blackplanet.com is locking up this spot quickly)
Look for BET.com to admit defeat, and merge with Blackplanet.com so that we could NAME OUR OWN PRICE on flights to DC right from the CHATROOM.
