Miles and FUBU Aint Meant to Be, Is this the end of Y2G?

Miles Rose, silicon alley hustler and SVP of Business Development at the FUBU/Samsung joint urban venture, Y2G.com, hit the bricks this week and parted ways with the portal "effective immediately". Miles is trying to spin his departure as an opportunity for him to "take some time off and evaluate his options". Dont be fooled, this is siliconalleyese for "Damn, y'all I got fired, but it's all good though."
Rose claims he is going to re-launch his notorious project SiliconAlley.com, a sponsored directory of developers and B-to-B players in the New York Internet community. In it's first go-round the only thing the site managed to do was direct thousands of dollars into Miles' pockets and he never published the directory. Most people forget that Miles took them for a couple of hundred bucks each and for the few that realized, he probably made it up to them by doling out money, from the well-endowed Y2G coffers.
Miles' exit, is undoubtedly the best move they've made since… well, this is the best move they've made. His business development approach was to co-brand Y2G with any crappy third party offering which diluted the FUBU brand. Y2G's content is so banal that it has invariably been left out of conversations regarding the urban space. Understandable, when their vision of urban content includes features as:
· Photos of the FUBU founders at a party with cigars
· Photos of the FUBU founders at a party without cigars
· Photos of the FUBU founders at a party on St. Marten, with and without cigars
The site also features Fu Gina, a virtual ghetto gossip chicken head who's currently battling BET's Cita, for the title of most offensive, stereotypical depiction of a black woman in an animated sequence. The site's chat rooms are mostly empty, inhabited by a few stragglers who don't like the massive crowds chatting at BlackPlanet and BET.com. The offerings are rounded out with weather and time brought as only y2g can, urban style! Truly intriguing. Thanks Miles!, without you how would the urban community ever figure out the time and weather?
Now it's up to founder and president John Copen and COO, David Horowitz to clean up the mess Miles made, and save their own asses, before Samsung decides they are sick of giving out free MP3 players, loaded with FUBU pitchman LL Cool J's "ill Bomb", and pulls the plug on the whole project. Poor Miles, now he has to go back to shuffling through those yellowing business cards of old contacts that he burned bridges to. Seems like just yesterday he was in the SAR 100 eating at Nobu with Jason. Now it's more like cocktails with Courtney.

why is it that some people never seem to learn from mistakes. I think its been fairly well proven that all these "x 2 x" plays (substitute your favorite letter for x) are nothing more than desperate attempts to find some kind of working business model on the internet. oh well, its not my money/life getting pissed down the drain due to a lack of understanding of the technological world.

DUMB, DUMBER AND THE DUMBEST...
John Copen, Norman Weisfeld and David Horowitz
should rename themselves the Three Stooges. I
worked on the monstrocity called Y2G.COM and it
was an absolute disaster from inception. I
have never seen a simplier bunch of folks that
couldn't decided on a color scheme, changed the
logo (which we here still think sucks) at least
six times, accured about 30K in billable hours on
tutorials to ask our designers to explain HTML and
Flash and then repeatedly missed their launch
windows. I can't believe anyone has the gumption
to suggest that John Copen is going to salvage the
mess as if he didn't contribute to it. What a joke.
Undertaking this venture it was clearly communicated
to the client that they had terrible branding and their
affiliate marketing strategies were laughable. All floss
and then they bitched about the project budget which I can't
divulge the numbers here, but let's say they spent a pretty
penny and we all got a laugh (at least the white guys here did,
the rest of us were just downright embarrassed).
UE, do your research next time before you give props
to people that don't deserve them. When is the
last time anyone visited this 'portal' for the Best in
Life? With its content pillaged and plundered from
other sites and that jigga-boo, juxtaposing like a virtual
sambo. Truly innovative stuff here. We were so glad when
we got rid of this client and have since adopted a no-urban
policy, which I am ashamed of. Live and learn.

i was of the first interns at AKA when they were in the ghetto offices of loud records. that place was run like shit from the beginning.

a.) Norman and Bruce Weisfield are responsible for the monstrosity known as Y2G.com. Norman and Bruce are the brothers who are partners with FUBU. They've added their cousin David Horowitz to try to clean up the mess founder John Copen started. David is one of 6 Weisfeld relatives working at FUBU. David's son is the lead programmer for Y2G.
b.) FUBU still thinks that they can take Y2G public, get rich, and bail.
c.) They have not been able to leverage FUBU in any Y2G business because no one takes them seriously.
d.) Agency.com ripped Y2G for a million dollar bill.
e.) The St. Maarten event was a failure that they allowed Chris Latimer to hustle them into.
f.) AKA hustled them for a content deal which Y2G still hasn't paid yet, and AKA is threatning to sue.

I hadn't hear the name Miles Rose in years until I came here, and like yearbook editor Calacanis, I know enough of the bodies around the Alley to wonder why.
Personally, I stopped dealing with him when he defended Michael Wolff.
My guess is that Mr. Rose, like a lot of the early Alley folks, burned their bridges. You think people forgot they gave him money and he didn't deliver? Please. They remembered. He's not the only one. There are a bunch of folks from the CD-ROM days who are now either consigned to obscurity or stuck in
middle management somewhere.
Once again, these folks didn't look inside the community for the help and support they needed, but hooked up with some "name" from their white backers or "partners".
Samsung has had a pretty fucked track record in sponsoring people in the Alley. They also backed Jaime Levy back in 1996.

not agree. Jews aren't the problem that
plague this space. Poor business practices
and misinformation is the leading cause for
failure in this medium. Tommy Hilfiger isn't
responsible for Karl Kani's lack of sales, it's
the same constituents that Karl represents and tries
to communicate to that would rather buy Tommy than
support his enterprise. There is an inherent distrust
amongst those of the urban mindset to focus on the trivial
and urbane rather than advance any real solutions. I can

like when people fall into this blaming others for their

Judge people by "the content of their character" not the shade

I worked on Y2G, it was a disaster they had no clear understanding of what they
were looking to accomplish, spent ridiculous money to teach their poster boys HTML and
never had a viable business platform beyond being brochureware for a mediocre, at
best clothing line. Which I might add is just what our kids needed, another reason to distract
them from doing their schoolwork while worrying about 'The Best in Life' from four idiots that
allowed themselves to be jerked by better businessmen. I would've jerked them too, given the
chance.

They went to the MAGIC show got $1million in orders and ran an ad in the NY Times for capital. That practice continues today from an economic standpoint when those of us who have achieved wealth think we have "arrived" with the few trinkets and status symbols we're allowed to have and continue to do business badly so in the end we have nothing to show for it. The purpose of a business is to provide a much needed service to the community. What is most needed now are black entreprenures that aren't just puppets and some schooling on how to hold onto our own and cut the crabs in a barrel bullshit for some shiny not even real gold ducats.
For the record,selling in would be investing your time,energy and money in running a successful, well oiled machine of a company and in turn educating others so when you're gone, something is left. I would love to see a network of black people really doing something positive and ridding themselves of that nigger mentality that has us shucking and jiving in Armani steady hating ourselves while we spend the equivalent of blood money. How can you complain about people being simple-minded when you aren't teaching them to be anything but by the example you set?

What do you expect from a young kid trying to make some money. Many of these young rappers never had the OPPORTUNITIES that you had. All they know is they have NO MONEY and you appear to have a lot. You try to show them the way.. but the problem is there are so many that are uneducated about business and the ones that are educated leave the hood... and leave the rest to fend for themselves and to be criticized by those who made it out.
There are so many of our young kids who don't expect to live past 30 years old... so they want to get what they can get FAST and worry about the future when it gets here.
And unlike yourself there was no foundation set for them to build there lives off of. You did not start from ZERO.
This is what these Execs in the industry prey on. The "uneducated and left for dead". They keep them uneducated and leave them to die. When they approach educated brothers like yourself... you get frustrated instead try to teach.

the problem with a lot of the people who post here is that they are actually hating themselves. Most post ficticious email addresses and urls. Most work for one of the failing dot-coms. So they realize that they are in the basket like the rest of us. That's scary for most.
But me I'm like since we are in the basket TOGETHER we might as well get real. We are all fucked up in here. The only way out is to speak about what the next man is afraid to. The only way out is to teach those who don't know.
We can say that we have opportunity in corporate america. Sure there is opportunity in corporate america as long as you play there game and do all you can to benefit them. As soon as you start speaking the truth... you're out!
So then you're left with two choices... (1) Change the way you think and forget about what you once stood for. or (2) Stand up for what you believe and for the people that share your struggle.
Most, unfortunately go for option (1). It's the easiest. And it get's them paid for the short term.
But those that go for option (2) pave the way for the weak ones that choose option (1)... MLK, X, Jesse, Ali, Jabbar....
Wake the fuck y'all. This is the internet. Everyone is right and everyone is wrong. It's the new frontier. Unless you own and internet based company that has actually turned a significant profit don't HATE.
For the first time in the history of America the poor man has been given the opportunity the level the playing field. Hate is only going get you to the desk job that you're sitting at right now. And if you're working for an internet company you're probably wondering how you're going to pay your rent in 6 months.
Let's get it together and really make use of this board. And make use of the infinite amount of information that's available to us on the internet.
We can use UE to build an actual community... not destroy it. With all of our resources we can put together a monthly discussion group or something where we can network and build with each other.

I work for a much hated upon music network and get countless calls from young people looking for an in. Be it how to get a video spin or whatever, it amazes me how little they know about the business.
It can be tough to take the time and school these callers on some issues within the business, but I always take the time to do so.
At the end of the day, when i'm not sure what i did all damned day anyway, i sit back and remember some of those calls and realize that helping someone feels pretty good.
You all seem capable of similar deeds, I recommend giving it a try. |

Jumping late into the conversation...I don't work for anyone either. I realized a couple months ago that my talents were being wasted in Corporate Amerikkka and that I was chasing a forever dangling carrot to no avail. So, I started my own joint to help others and myself. We need to stop this bullshit and start schooling those who don't know the biz and stay on point ourselves. If you think that being in a place of privilege does not call for a certain amount of responsiblity...you're dead wrong. As for starting something postive, I got an email this morning from a friend who knows another brother in need of help. He's an indie filmmaker trying to get his film made with no money or resources...he spent 3 years trying to get it made through industry channels but folks kept stalling calling the project great but saying that the time and market wasn't right. They're looking for volunteers in every aspect for their feature from extras to crew to sponsorship. Do something postive and help a struggling brother out.

I work a regular 9 to 5 and do not work weekends so I have time for myself and family unlike you so called self employed. I do not have the hustling cutthroat mentality to deal with all the bullshit that comes along with working for yourself or owning a business. I have worked for black startups and had to depart because either I was not getting paid or/and the lack of professional atmosphere so I would problably never do that again. |

Don't you sound like a stupid ass. It's not just black start-ups. That's the start-up atmosphere in general. As for not getting paid, sometimes it happens when you're paying people w/ a courtesy check from your credit card company. I am sure that there are 10x as many white start-ups not paying their employees as black startups.
I worked for one part time during my freshman and sophomore years of school and I got paid correct and on time. Now I have my own start-up and I pay correct and on time as well. I haven't resorted to courtesy checks yet, but who knows what the future holds.
