Russell Sells Outs, Tells Employees Get The Hell Out.

Seems like the Dream Team has lost steam and cream. More then 30% of the staff of 360hiphop is being let go this morning in effort to ensure a smooth transition during the BET acquisition. Internet access has been turned off for most employees who are being downsized. The content and marketing people will continue to write articles no one reads and market a site no one visits, for the time being.
The acquisition was a desperation deal for 360hiphop. They were burning through their initial financing, faster then Selwyn could change Phat Farm outfits. The monthly burn rate for creative alone was close to 1.5 million dollars a month. Evidently Russell had given Selwyn Hinds carte blanche. Extravagant spending ensued, trips for 20 staff members to fly to Miami for 7 days to cover the Urban Fashion Week conference was the norm.
Roughly 24 staff members have been let go today from a staff of 65. And this is only the beginning. Evidently 70% of the staff will be let go before the end of the month. Just some people get more warning than others. BET and 360Hihop executives terminated over 1/3 of the staff today, claiming the need to eliminate redundancies caused by BET's acquisition of 360hiphop. Osman Eralp, interim CEO, spent the morning reassuring fired employees that he fought for their jobs as hard as he could. Russell of course, was nowhere around. The conversation for saving jobs that took place a week ago probably went something like this:
Bob Johnson: Russell, get rid of 30% of that staff by years end!
Russell Simons: Damn! Who is gonna read my email for me now?.
Bob Johnson: Well, either you fire them or we reduce your payout by 2 thousand dollars.
Russell Simons: Damn! OK, I'll cut 70% if Kimora gets Rachel's spot on Live from LA.
Bob Johnson: Done!
Russell Simons: Hey Bob... want some used 2-way pagers?
Bob Johnson: Hell yeah, its about saving money boy! My staff uses tin-cans and string to communicate.
The legal department has been let go as well as some of the 6 figure marketing people. Many of the high salaried individuals at the company will no be receiving severance packages because BET.com felt they were overpaid. The good news is that the company is allowing them to keep their company bought cell phones if they just sign the waiver to pay their own bill. The bad news, all 2-way pagers from fired employees will be confiscated. Evidently, 360hiphop feels letting them have those would be, "too much flossing".
Russell has been heard at many industry functions admitting he wish he never started 360hiphop. We actually blame the Castling group (http://www.castlinggroup.com/) for their early mismanagement of the project. They set up no checks and balances for financial spending and recommended some expensive 3rd party solutions. Urban content can be profitable and will work in the Internet space. It just won't be 360hiphop.

I then called the Vanguarde offices and asked point blank, "Is this the headquarters for Urban Expose?" The receptionist hesitated, so I asked her again. Lessons to learn.
Any person working in the internet space (dot com) needs to have options in their contract. In addition, they need to have a "change of ownership" clause, so if the company is bought by another larger dot com or corporation, they immediately vest (at the announcement) and can exercise options and leave the company. We all know that during all mergers dot com's or corporate their are lay-offs, as soon as the dust settles.
Those of you out there read your options agreements! Ask about vesting and cliff time lines! And make sure there is a "change of ownership" clause!

As a former reporter at two daily newspapers, managing editor at two weeklies and news director/morning anchor at a radio station, it amazes me the amount of dollars these websites are spending. These folks obviously have no idea what it means to run a business. I mean, come on, $1.5 million a month?
One of the problems I've had with so many of these web plays is they are based in New York, and far too many of these folks have a holier-than-thou, I'm-off-the-hook attitude. I've met many of these "reporters" and they have no clue journalistically, but because someone pays them $50,000 to $70,000, they actually think they are worth it. But put them in a position of working in a daily news environment and they would be killed by the actual reporting.
Second, it's silly to be paying marketing executives six-figure salaries. Most newspapers don't do that, and television folks as well.
These web companies -- and not just urban sites -- are realizing the Internet is a shell game. You can't spend tons of money and think the dollars will come flowing later.
What's happening now? All of the big boys are showing folks that "old media" is king because they have the revenue streams to run these businesses.
Many of these sites don't need the large staffs they have acquired. From what I understand, UBO.net has what, 300 to 500 employees? Doing what?! Many newspapers don't have staffs that large, and they put out daily products!
I would hope people running these businesses realize they don't know what they are doing. No business can bleed $1.5 million in cash a month and expect to survive.
I'm sorry to hear of so many people getting let go, but this is what happens when people who are running the business don't know how to handle spending and talent. |

UE's story is not entirely accurate. There are only about 20 of us left. Not including myself; I got the boot this morn.
OK cool. But faggot Selwyn saved his own ass, he saved Sheena's ass and his best boy Mark Hines. All of these people have not done much of anything like work--But they're Sel's homies. Sel did manage to fuck over his girl Yvette Russell (she got fired) and she went out drinking with her assistant about an hour ago--But I heard Selwyn whisper to Yvette and her assistant that he would probably be able to get them on at a Vanguard Publication; Again, nepotism taking the place of talent. Yvette is a mess, editorially and otherwise. But look for her to head up Honey or Impact's masthead soon.
I got one extra check from the company; that should last me about one week, but Russell never gave a damn about me.
Most of the other departments were depleted. But ironically, the Political Dept., made up of 2 chincs and a white boy, remains intact. Oh and even the little black girl intern that Jeff Chang allows to blow him every once in a while. These folks are among the least talented in our shop and they are definitely not colored so they didn't represent US.
But once Bob Johnson sees these folks upclose and see that they reallly had nothing to offer, and are lazy flossers frontin'--They will be let go.
Everything that Sel and Sheena have pulled will come back to haunt them; only so long can folks sucker the system and their own people. Sel did fuck over a lot of folks this morning--some of them were even his homies.

Britney and boy bands aside, the Ellis Island affair was primarily a bash for the advertisers and media, says Watkins; a total of 1,200 attended. One UBO employee said the party cost close to $250,000, even though he'd heard rumors saying it cost $1 million. Watkins says both numbers were way off and that sponsors like Coca-Cola and Seagram sopped up most of the cost. Still, after months of false starts, UBO employees were feeling a little existential angst about celebrating their existence. "The whole thing was kind of 'Eh' " says one. Industry veteran Al Teller's Atomic Pop, a digital entertainment site that offered music from Public Enemy and Ice-T, among others, has officially closed its doors.
As first reported here last month, Atomic Pop had been facing a cash crunch and had been struggling to avoid shutting down for some time. Sources said the company could not find a financial investor. Previous backers Rare Medium had reportedly pulled out and would not continue to back the venture, sources said.
On Friday (9/8), the company's staff was called into a meeting and told the company was indeed going out of business, sources said. Sources said about 25 people have lost their jobs. The latest round of layoffs follows several employees who were fired weeks ago.
Founded by Teller, the former chief of MCA and CBS, Atomic Pop was a forward thinking online music venture that often positioned itself as anti-traditional music industry. Teller started the company less than two years ago.
Atomic Pop is the latest digital entertainment company to fall victim to financial difficulties. Other recent casualties include DEN and Pop.com.
Atomic Pop reps could not be reached for comment.

Part of the problem is that a lot of companies have bought into the myth of Internet time and crisis management.
It takes years to build an effective website. With so many young employees, you need strong, professional management willing to guide them.
A website shouldn't have 70 people on staff. It makes no sense. Hiring a lot of staff to do ecommerce or other shit which may never make them a dime. Trying to keep everything in house.
A lot of these execs hire based on the old way of doing business and don't maximize the internet for saving money.
Why do people hire their cronies to spend OPM? There's a real lack of ethics when it comes to running these businesses.
Simmons is not to blame for getting the hell out of a business that he didn't understand. Although there is no independent evidence that anyone at BET gets the web either.

Indeed Urban content well work...However the Internet economy is based on content+services+technology.
The Internet is a Medium to expand traditional Business models. Technology in the purest form decreases cost to manufacture product.
The failure of a majority of these Internet content plays from 360HipHop to Dr. Koop is that they lacked a service to make the everyday life simpler.
The Internet is about efficiency...

I agree about the overspeculative, "goldrush" nature of many I-net startups, in particular these urban lifestyle start-ups.
Unfortunately, in general, too many young, black and/or American businesses are into quick profits and not into economics as a tool for social development.
When we can obtain 8 figure deals/gambles in hopes of starting up what are technically useless luxuries, and cannot get investment into the infrastructure and educational needs of our black communities, thats a sign that our priorities are fucked-up.
I could see if some of the money burned in these 00,000,000 deals were benefitting charities or causes, but they're paying for lavish Manhattan / LA parties, perks and other forms of decadence.
Meanwhile, kids are getting high, getting shot, getting locked up. In our hunt for internet wealth, have we abandoned all black youth without internet accounts and t-1 connections?

A few comments in response to various postings:
1. I don't know what the 360 staff did to provoke such emnity but its largely undeserved. (Except for Rhonda, she brought that on herself.)
2. There are many, many talented rank and file people at BET who will never get their just due or the salary their hard work deserves because the company does not respect them or their efforts. but many of them are able to use the skills they learn there to go on to other jobs.
3. Why shouldn't journalists get paid on the Internet? Without people to provide content, it cannot survive. Can technies write stories and do interviews? No, just like journalists shouldn't be coding and designing. So writers moving on to the Internet was a natural segue. And yes, it provided several people with more money than they'd ever made. Don't we all work to better our position and feed ourselves and our families? Wouldn't we all like to get paid more to better be able to do that?
If urban magazines hadn't crashed and burned and their people hadn't flossed and grandstanded their way out of jobs, there might still be opportunities there.
5.People, especially black folks losing their livelihood is not particularly amusing. Could be you next, wherever you work. And it aint like corporate America is opening up their arms to hire and promote black folks or has the last 20 years escaped you completely??
6. Russell chose to sell 360 instead of closing it so he saved at least half the staff's jobs. Given the problems with their financing, it could have closed entirely. Like him or not.. and I'll stay neutral...he is a businessman. And the deal made sense for everyone.

Ok, 360 spent way to much money, has been mismanaged from day ONE and not even attempted to make a profit (can't even get the damn banner ads working right). So, of course they need to close down - frankly, I'm surprised as shit that BET (Bob) was stupid enough to buy into branding and not think about a revenue stream (past, present, or future). All I know is that the people there were getting paid too much and should've been fired anyway cause most are incompetent. How many people on the staff (except the web developers) have internet experience? And, of those, what amount have worked for and contributed to successful dot com's? NONE (to my knowledge). I'm just glad I got outta there when I did several weeks ago (before BET came into the picture). |

I agree with some of the comments. The reality is that some people win in this situation and some people lose. People who are fired are now disaffected. The company also could have succeeded on it's own. Obviously that wasn't the long term plan based on the the facts urban expose has reported. I understand it was a business desicion that had to be made. But what about all the oppotunities to make business desicions before this to make sure it didn't come to this? I think this site helps put all of that in perspective.

What an absurd statement black folks dont buy computers, me and most of my friends and family own computers, I read an article a couple of weeks ago discussing the so called digital divide between black and white. In Upper middle class and working class homes
(middle class) there is virtually no divide, computers are dirt cheap today with prices starting around 500. The newjack technology pimps of the black community (johnson, dash, simmions,...ect )arent interested in getting poor people online, they are more interested in targeting the black upper middle class, working class. People with credit cards, debit cards, secured credit cards. People with disposable income. People who are more likely to spend than save. But who are they to think that black computer users arent savy enough to make their own decisions as to what sites they will utilize while on the internet. Like we all think and act the same and we as an captive audience can be targeted for hair care products, malt liquor, jewelry, and what ever garbage they think they can sell us.

Sources Say Cash-Starved Pseudo About to Go Under

Sources close to struggling webcaster Pseudo report that CEO David
Bohrman is actively shopping the company to other firms in the
streaming media space--and that if he can't find a buyer within the
next week or so, the cash-starved company will close its doors.
One executive at a company approached by Bohrman says Pseudo has less
than three weeks of cash left. Other sources in the streaming media
space say Bohrman's proposals aren't meeting with much enthusiasm,
and that no likely candidates have emerged to buy the site. One
source said Pseudo's corporate structure is a major impediment to a
buyout: any acquisition would require a substantial up-front cash
investment to pay off investors and executives--and right now, few
companies are interested in buying into the troubled webcasting
space.
Pseudo has always had trouble with its timing. The six-year-old
venture, created by Jupiter Communications founder-turned-flamboyant
artisté Josh Harris, was expected to file for an IPO last fall--a
plan derailed by CEO Larry Lux's departure in November. Former CNNfn
exec Bohrman took on the chief executive post in January, and raised
$14 million in May to keep the company going. Two months ago, Bohrman
cut nearly 60 staffers--over a quarter of Pseudo's workforce-- and
shuffled another 30 into new positions. He also overhauled the site's
format completely in what many saw as a last-ditch effort to reinvent
and save the site.
The consumer-focused streaming media space is also out of favor with
investors--sources say key Pseudo investor LVMH (also a backer of the
infamous Boo.com) is uninterested in funding another cash infusion
for Pseudo.
Officials at LVMH could not be reached for comment. Several other
Pseudo investors, including longtime backer Intel Capital, did not
return calls. Jeff Springer, a principal at venture capital firm
Prospect Street Ventures, which contributed to Pseuso's most recent
financing round, said his firm has not been approached by Pseudo
about additional funding. If they were, would they be willing to put
up further cash to bail out the company?
"That's one of those questions you never want to answer until you
have to," he replied. "We continue to support the company, and to
have full faith in its management."
He noted that the webcasting/broadband entertainment space "holds
enormous potential, but it's taken a lot longer to realize than many
people expected. ... It's going to continue to be a very
cash-intensive business. Whoever is out there trying to compete will
have to spend a lot of money."
At the moment, it's a space with few healthy competitors. Well-funded
DEN collapsed spectacularly, Pop.com died before even launching, and
Alley-based On2.com has laid off staff and lost several top
executives. Shockwave and Scour also thinned their herds last week.
The strongest ventures right now are those focusing on animation and
shorts, rather than live webcasting: AtomFilms, Honkworm, Stan Lee
Media, Mondo Media are all holding steady, with CameraPlanet.com,
SpinTheBottle.com, Alltrue.com, and a host of other content ventures
waiting in the wings.
Pseudo is one of the original pioneers of webcasting, but it still
hasn't attracted the critical mass of viewers needed to woo
advertisers. Media Metrix shows no reportable traffic for Pseudo,
meaning it's drawing less than 200,000 unique users per month. The
site rarely has more than a few dozen users logged in.
Pseudo executives are tight-lipped about the company's troubles, and
aren't responding to reports of its imminent demise. "We don't
comment on rumors and speculation," said spokesperson Jeanne Meyer.
Asked if the company is searching for a buyer, she said it's
"exploring a lot of different financing options." CEO David Bohrman
and President Tony Asnes did not return calls seeking comment.
