Was The Source Hip-Hop Awards Edited By Golden Harvest or Ocean Video?
|
 |
UPN aired what they could of the 2000 Source Hip-Hop Awards, last night and besides shots of Lil' Kim's g-string, it wasn't much to see. Pressed to fill two hours of allotted network time and fulfill it's commitment to sponsors such as Sony and Sprite, UPN used the show as a hip-hop soundtrack to their shameless infomercial of new shows for their first and most likely, last season. We've seen Kung Fu flicks with better continuity.
The doomed telecast began with a plea read by one of the few poets that became a successful rapper, Mos Def. He asked for peace and acknowledged that the taping of the awards was disrupted by violence. Def's appeal came off as an attempt to spin blame away from Source Entertainment and UPN. The short speech filled with played "increase the peace" clichés ultimately bombed in the end by trying to downplay the melee as an isolated incident. Luckily he didn't add in "Middle East"
Filling the time anyway they could, UPN used what would normally be considered cutting room floor footage of hosts Mo'Nique, Busta Rhymes, and Da Brat. It seemed like a contest in who could curse the most in prime-time network television. The show has more audience reaction shots and laugh and applause tracks than a Bob Saget show. The cast of the new UPN sitcom "Girlfriends" which is "Sex in the City" meets Living Single, was shown about 57 times in what seemed like the same performance over and over again. What drama they couldn't hide in the footage they covered with large bottom screen blocks filled with UPN network ads.
"In awards given earlier" should have gotten an award it's self for most said phrase, as UPN added later taped segments of the hosts giving the what would have been the biggest awards of the night. Slim Shady won for lyricist of the year in a last minute executive decision, an award that was originally slated to be won by Common based on the Source's online and reader votes. They did manage to have the some performances by the hottest acts in the industry like Jay-z, Mobb Deep and Lil Kim. The 2000 Source Awards theme was the Made Men's new single, which was used in the commercials aired nationally on UPN, MTV and BET to advertise the awards for months now.
UPN aired Public Relations pieces on the show in the news programs following the awards nationally, with the in-depth red carpet interviews on hip-hop with actress Debi Masur and the big-behind short haired chick from Pamela Anderson Lee's show V.I.P. in attempt to put a different face on the awards show. David Mays has used his influence to define hip-hop as fancy cars, 2 way pagers, gang-related fights, and cursing on television. Thank David.
One mitigating factor is that in the pre-show Ray-J was seen wearing his sisters jewelry, could her skirts be far behind?

This is a lesson in how not to edit a show... the costume changes did not match with what was going on at the time... why would MONIQUE and BUSTA change back into the same outfits that they had on before had?.... whats up with the GUCCI sweatsuits (RED/METH)....and the crowd did not really seem interested in the bull that was going on? and why did MADE MEN perform have u heard their record on the radio at all? hmmm.... i wanted to see the REDMAN & METH performance which we where robbed of... and DAVID MAYS still has not made a public statement about this fiasco..... SUPPORT XXL MAGAZINE hip hop on the real no filler... sponsor MOTOROLA had a good idea with the winners being read off the 2 way pager but it just didnt come off effective... but the commericals where there.... |
Ok so the Source Awards sucked. Whose fault is it anyway? What really is the issue how is everyone at 360 these days? Feeling like a slave or what? Do you like working for BET! Keep it real. |
It was soooooo bad. I almost thought I was watching the Miss Collegiate Black America Awards. You know the type of awards show that has bad editing, added background noise then extreme quiet, "out of nowhere" clapping, and the same recycled scenes of the audience looking in the same direction. I was thankful that Lil Kim didn't have to read off the teleprompter. Something else that was stupid was the scripted commentary between the presenters. Hardy Har har. So fucking funny. I felt sorry for Dead Prez, Mos Def, and Common, because this was not an inclusive hip hop show.
And once again, why do 6000 people need to be onstage to accept an award or rap, when you are not an actual band?????? |
I had to post on this one.
I laughed and screamed at the television last night as I watched the Source Awards fiasco. I understand why they made the decision to air the show (sponsorships, ad revenue, etc) however, I don't understand why they did such a poor job of editing the footage.
One of my "non person of color" friends emailed me the following statement....
"the show reinforced Hollywood's perception of African Americans...look for a fresh new batch of screen plays/movies for 2001 from this image"....
In addition, some of us DC folks are wondering if Maxine Waters office should issue a statement as to her thoughts and comments on the show. (Since she was profiling and having a good time in the front row).
Did anyone catch that Busta Rhymes made the same statement twice for two different awards?
I am so disgusted. I might have to renew my VIBE subscription!
|
I think if they would have "kept it real" and showed what really went on it would have been a better show. Most of rap today is about sex and violence so why couldnt they broadcast the violence that cut the show short. Did anyone notice some of the gang symbolism and overtones that couldnt be edited out like rappers in all red or blue. I bet it was real nervous up in that spot that night. |
360 hiphop used to tell everybody bet sucked. now look at 360's broke ass! russell sold them out. he did not give a shit about the web or online sites. he was in it for the money. he gave selwyn and everybody big salaries, but spent under a million, at most two, then stayed away from the company and sold it to bet for $20 million! the staff at 360 used to think they were down with russell, but now look. the first chance he gets, russell sells the company so he won't have to work with these nerds and wannabes. and 360 has to work for the company they always used to insult. |
That bootlegged broadcast could have been better done as a highlight show. Did they really think that people would beieve that the hosts would change out of outfits only to change into them again?
And what's up with Dave Mays group that no one ever heard of, Made Men? When they could use more popular or better tracks as the theme to the awards, Mays once again uses the Source platform to promote his own personal interests. Is their any doubt that the Source is now the running joke in hip-hop? |
Word Lisa 360 would diss everyone now look at them Mr. Simmons put them on the auction block and sold them like slaves. Are you still down for him now! Ha, Ha I wonder if they will take the blocks off Urban Expose now. Will you all still be making those $$$ Bling Bling my brothers and sisters. In regards to the Source, hey shit happens at least Dave keeps it real and true to hip-hop. Big shouts to Slim Shady, thanks for letting the world know that we have white poor people in America. Let it all out the bag and yes, many people do not like gay people and believe in procreation. |

Hip-Hop Awards on UPN Win Big Even Without the Brawling
Wednesday, August 30 11:41 a.m.
UPN's The Source Hip-Hop Awards, which played out backstage like an episode of WWF Smackdown, has generated some wrestling-like Nielsen numbers.
Tuesday's metered-market overnights gave the award show a 5.0 rating, 8 share in households, not that far from the 5.8/9 averaged this summer by UPN's mega-hit Smackdown. These ratings also represent about three times the network's Tuesday overnight average for the summer (1.7/3).
National ratings will probably fall well off the WWF pace, given the more concentrated big-market appeal of the Hip Hop Awards, but they are still big numbers by UPN standards. Before Tuesday, the best overnights UPN had managed on any night of the week besides Thursday this summer was a 3.1/5 (twice with Monday's urban-targeted lineup). That puts the Hip Hop Awards 61 percent ahead of any non-Smackdown UPN night this summer.
Of course, the Nielsens were hardly hurt by the swarm of controversy surrounding the ceremony, which was shut down by police after a number of fights broke out backstage. The scrum was edited out of the broadcast, though, resulting in some awkward moments for viewers unaware of what had happened.
The show's success also reminds UPN how much it owes to its urban -- that is, largely African-American -- audience. The only other competitive Tuesday for UPN all summer long had been the previous week's showing of the movie Hot Boyz, which scored a 2.8/4 in metered-market households, 75 percent better than UPN's previous average on the night.

Slim Shady representing poor white folks, ha ha!. He's more representing the disenfranchisement of white males in this country where today white skin privledge isnt what it used to be. Now white folks have to compete with the world of color. |
One thing's for sure, it was entetaining. Awful, but entertaining. I just can't wait for the BET Awards. In case you haven't heard, that's coming early next year. Just what we need...another awards show, and one from BET at that. God help us all. |

Go to this link for a BILLBOARD ONLINE special report
http://www.billboard.com/specialreport/ |
oh, lord. i know i’ma hate myself for entering the fray, but …
1) contrary to what anyone says on these posts, 360 has never gone around dissing other sites. that's just ridiculous. many of us have friends and colleagues at these places that we'd take bullets for any day of the week. plus, what sense would it make to publicly malign companies that, should an axe or two fall--like they inevitably do, we may have to potentially step to for jobs? c'mon on now: at least trust that folks here have more professional maturity than that, for crissakes ...
2) what makes you think that cats over here are making the amounts of dough being reported? don't believe that ancient 'net newsletter piece, where they incorrectly (and very cheesily, i might add) reported the salary of one senior 360 staffer. and what's more, if it was true, wouldn't that be cause for celebration? black journalists rarely see the salaries of their white counterparts across every medium--in newspapers, magazines, on TV, radio, the 'net, etc.-- which is what heads ought to be concerned about instead of hating on their peers ... particularly since a couple of us are directly responsible for getting some of hip-hop culture’s best and brightest writers exposed and paid for their overlooked talents …
3) again, don’t believe what lisa "sadly-sounds-like-a-still-embittered-former-360-employee-who's-way-too-brilliant-and-progressive-to-be-bogged-down-by-resentment-and-ill-will" warren or anybody else will have you believe. russell didn't sell anybody out--and certainly not the "nerds and wannabes" that run HIS company. let the brother handle his business; he's got a bit of a track record, you know? why don't you let the dust settle, then make your judgements? that's what we're doing, and we certainly have more at stake--personally and professionally--that most of ue's esteemed posters.
|
first of all xxl is weak. the source got them all f*cked up. don't be mad because you work at some wack hip hop publication that will be put out of business by the source. The show was a hit look at the ratings. |
sheena,
good measured response. if it provokes anyone, they're just hatin. thanks for steepin up. it's going to make ue a better place when real people step up and present their points of view without inflamed rhetoric and venom spewing. |
the ratings were 5.5 with a 9 share. so get it right andrew jackson. yo thuglife ya heard me |
is lil kim still black? i saw her an i felt bad - i think she is trying to be a real "barbie doll" she need to stop. anyway, the awards were the worst. i played with my godson and programmed my VCR for the first time. dave mays should be ashamed and those cats acted like the have no clue what it is to have class and to act civil. i just dont get..."is this hip hop? hell no this is war" - MOP...
hey shout out to sheena lester for doing here thing from rap paged to now ... word up. |
my fault - still though - big shout out to sheena lester! |
It was a hit in the sense that white people get a kick justifying their racist notions about black people being loud, ignorant and violent so they tuned in to be entertained. The show was wack and an embrassment to black people everywhere. |
That's really the truth Corporate. I would have rather had no one watch it, then people watch and see the poorly done show and realize the fact that the show was done that way is because of the big fights.
Time for a management rehaul over there at Source Entertainment. |
Hey Sheena:
360 would always dis everyone. Don't lie to try to make peace with your new bosses at BET. They already know about 360. Some people at BET went around the industry and already tracked down what was said about them.
As for your claim that you and people at 360 would "take bullets" for friends at other sites, you need to stop listening to all the Hot Boyz albums and come down to earth. You are a office worker. You are not from the streets. And about you saying we shouldn't trust a salary report from a "'net newsletter piece," that newsletter was reputable enough for you to appear in one of their columns, so what are you saying? Soulpurpose article by Knox Robinson stinks, but you go and appear in Soulpurpose to hype yourself up anyway? Where's your integrity?
As for 360 having "some of hip-hop culture' best and brightest writers" that's just you being a gasbag again.
And as for saying Lisa "sadly-sounds-like-a-still-embittered-former-360-employee-who's-way-too-brilliant-and-progressive-to-be-bogged-down-by-resentment-and-ill-will," who you talking about? Kris Ex? or my boy Ronin Ro? From what I read on this site, 360 did Ronin wrong for no reason. The fact is, yall talk a good game about wanting to help hiphop's best, but actually screw them around. In my book, Ronin is the best. Period. And reading his interviews online, it's obvious you cats were hating on HIM for no reason. Then you get mad when people hate on you. That, like everything else in your letter, makes absolutely no sense. Neither does 360 trying to make nice with sites they were dissing in industry parties (I was standing right by some of yall and heard yall talking). |
If there is another source award show next year lets see how many figure heads from any part of the industry attend. From the look of this show it was sparsely attended by industry people, I didnt see the movers and shakers in the music like Master P, Puffy, Clive Davis, Barry Gordy ect.. it looked to me like most people with clout in the industry decided to stay home. Just wait until next year. |

That was crazy to see Maxine Waters there! I mean that would have been just as insane to see Oprah Winfrey sitting there throwing her hands in the air and wavin 'em like she just didn't care! The only high profile person I would have expected to see was Johnnie Cochran, cuz half of his clientele was up in the place. |
But is 360 selling out if they merge with another Black-owned business? Even one owned by as niggardly a nig- well, "brother" (and I use the term loosely) as Bob Johnson? To me that sounds like a rare commitment between two very visible Black Enterprises. I am surprised and pleased to see Russ do business with another Black big dog, as opposed to the Hilfigers and Shrivers and so forth. |
Sheena Lester, you also wrote "russell didn't sell anybody out--and certainly not the "nerds and wannabes" that run HIS company. let the brother handle his business; he's got a bit of a track record, you know? why don't you let the dust settle, then make your judgements?" Russell did sell each and everyone of you out. each and everyone of you also do not realize the harm you have done to your reputations. you can slander writers and editors and artists all you want, but they will continue to survive and make moves. but you and the 360 staff will forever be known as the people who went from being objective and marginal talents at best, to bring russell's cheerleaders and def jam/phat farm pitchpeople. That is one thing that onelevel's business plan got right. 360 has no credibility or objectivity. everything russell wants on the site goes on the site, even his apartment. so how can any of you up there try to say you're journalists or writers? you're pawns. that's how an entire wave of writers lost the little cred or name recognition they had. by selling out for the big checks and not being honest about it. by trying to defend simmons, who looked like a buffoon on c-span this weekend, sitting near real political rep Dick Gregory. simmons has always been about fattening his pockets. the 360 staff was so happy to get their $70k, $80k, and over $100k salaries that they forgot that. and now russell has sold you to the very company you all said you were against. what's next? being sold to hookt? the company yall really used to insult?
|
satan,
the "would take bullets for friends" comment was meant figuratively, babe. surely you have friends you've known for years or professional peers you've established skin-tight relationships with that you'd go down to the wire for. that's what i meant. sorry if i confused you.
did i dis "soul purpose?" no. i said what they reported was both incorrect and cheesy, which i firmly believe. and that's no secret to "soul purpose" 'cause i hastily responded to that article after it's posting saying exactly what i just posted.
and excuse me: did i say 360 had the best and brightest writers around? again, no -- but we certainly have some of 'em, baby, like it or not. i said a couple of us--particularly the two of us who have run print magazines--have paid and exposed some of the culture's best and brightest, which is true. and you certainly should be happy about that 'cause i'm sure you've read some of those writers' articles over the years and been entertained and engaged.
as for "your boy" ronin, the last person you have to tell about ronin's dopeness is me. i love ronin's work and have for years. he knows that. i haven't read his interviews speaking on the subject of his tenure here, but i'd love to. where are they? and by the way, if you take what's been said on these posts as gospel, you're more foolish and eddie griffin, friend. for real.
finally, obviously if you overheard some 360 staffer dissing BET at an industry party, i can't dispute that 'cause i wasn't there. and as this site certainly proves, folks' opinions are what they are -- opinions. but for you to talk integrity while eavesdropping on conversations and posting under a fake name is ludicrous. you do know that, right? |
The reality, people, is that the very people we looked to for objective reporting have all sold out for the money. We can no longer trust the staff at 360 hiphop but they will continue to get jobs because they have friends in the media. they will return to xxl, the source, and vibe. that means we can't trust xxl, the source or vibe either. so long as people are given jobs because they are someone's friend, even if they're known for selling out and lying for their paychecks, the longer we as black people will not receive real news and information we can use. And for all 360's talk of being down for black people, why does Russell get on Tv and say rap is really %80 white? when the real figure is %68? Who is russell really building this site for? and who are these pompous "black revolutionaries" and "champagne rebels" really writing stories for? everyone in the industry, do not hire these people. they will only ruin the honesty of your organizations. |
I think it's quite clear that no one respects ANY information in soul purpose... that was clear before Urban expose came on the scene, now between UE reports, impact 24/7. Soul purpose themselves, they have erased all doubt.
As for 360hiphop, no one can use that site.. it stinks. However, sheena you can be proud that the articles there at 360hiphop are great. You did great work before 360hiphop and you do great work now.
|
yo, don't get it twisted, y'all. do the science: the only "names" BET.com has are tonya pendleton & miles marshall lewis, and sheena lester used to give 'em both cover stories when she ran xxl.
take it for what it's worth. |
Thanks Sheena. I really do love this site but all the hatin and fact distortion has to stop. + Lisa Warren (the one who posts here) is shameless, envious, hateful, resentful and like i said before, kinda crazy.
|
OK, so URBANEXPOSE is run by Vanguarde.....hmmmmm.
Don't believe me? Just take a look at the same format on sidehustle's page.

Wow. I'm sorry. Wasn't this supposed to be a secret?
P.S. If I am late with this info, take it easy on me. |
You know, it always scares me when some natual born negro runs around telling folks not to hire negros. Im gonna act like your momma right now and yank your ear for you fool. Have you lost your damn mind? What's one person having a job got to do with you. Especially when the company is one that it seems you wouldn't work for. We sit up here and talk about people flossing and/or hating but what really gets in my britches is some serious tom who tries to knock down the next man in the name of progress. "don't hire these people" who the hell are you? When you get yours then make the decisions you have to make for yourself and your business but don't be paul revere for the white man warning them to lock the doors the negros are coming. Im not a violent person but somebody should smack your butt sane for that nonsense you spewed.

Why is Lisa Warren always commenting on every story I read on here? Do you guys actually have work to do at UBO?
I think we kinda strayed away from the issue at hand, which is about the Source awards. It sucked. That is all I have to say about that.
I think the rap community needs to begin to take responsibility for what they do because it affects the masses. Ruining what was supposed to be a joyous occasion celebrating achievements is no place to duke it out with people you are beefing with.
|
Can I pose this thought:
Over the years, people have been going to Philadelphia Eagle games and causing trouble. It's so bad that I have heard they have their own court at games for offenders. Just this weekend at a game, some guys got to brawling, fighting and put out. Rowdy fans. Why isn't anyone saying: Football encourages violence, the nfl is responsible, and these players get paid too much, or with the big brawl in baseball a couple nights ago. Why are we demonizing Hip-Hop? I know that it is violent, the lyrics suck, and all that...I realize all that, but don't blame the music...if anyone is to blame it is the corporate aspect. black people don't need to check themselves, ignorant ass muggs do. Don't generalize, cause it aint Hip-Hop. Does that make sense? I did when I started to write it hahaha |
I don't think Lisa works for UBO, cause she disses em purty bad on the site. She is kind of out there. |
"Why isn't anyone saying: Football encourages violence, the nfl is responsible, and these players get paid too much, "
people say that all the time. um, rae carruth anybody? or ray lewis. jumbo elliott. or now corey dillon. i think most people know that football encourages violent behavior. |
Angie, you're a bag of shit who keeps putting Lisa Warren's name on the No Buzz list, lazy ho. All black people aren't the same. There are good and bad, as with any race. But you seem to be saying, "Well, so what if 360 are a bunch of inept bags of shit? They're helping us win the war against white people!" It's people like the staff at 360, the few black faces in that spot, that ruin the entire internet industry for others who have legitimate sites and legitimate reasons for wanting to start a website. Thinking like you do is what sets everyone back. Here's the equation: 360 is formed to advance the cause. 360 is staffed with idiots who don't want to advance the cause. The cause is not advanced. 360 is revealed to be nothing but a haven for inexperienced vultures with fat salaries. People call 360 out. A bag of shit like you comes out to say, ""Well, so what if 360 are a bunch of inept bags of shit? They're helping us advance the cause!" Why can't we as black people be allowed to tell the truth about the people who claim to represent us in the media? especially when its obvious that the last thing they want to do is represent us in the media? You lousy two bit bag of shit. You just keep sweating Lisa Warren and leave the analysis to those of us who know what we're talking about. |
And btw I think Lisa's one of the craziest people on this site, but she's usually right. So Lisa, whoever you are, keep doing your thing and don't let these haters get you down! |
Right on Sheena
I hear what you're saying. You've no doubt have paid dues and done good things for people in this biz. I apprecaited your efforts in putting together A Day In Hip Hop. Russell is a big hustler, but at least he's attempting to give some of you guys a chance to shine in a business that doesn't always do that. One suggestion is for 360 to not be so damn arrogant especially when they are not at the top of their game. I personally have heard staffers talk shit about other companies. Until they're running shit like Bill Gates it would be best if 360 staff keep their mouths shut and not talk shit. With that being said, having poersonally dealt with BET, I hope they pay you on time. There were too many days when the checks didn't come on time. Anyone who has ever worked with or at BET know exactly what I'm talking about. Question to people on the list. Why has BET and Radio One never gotten together and made noise? |
Do people get shot up or stabbed or beat down at Eagles games. Do the philly eagles fans go to the games for the sole purpose of shutting down the game. answer that question |
Ok, to avoid "kicking them when their down" the Source really showed their ass this time!!!
Aside from the fact that The Source warddrobe staff had almost everyone wearing "Old-School" attire, (since we know this is going to be the Lastest craze), they even stooped so low in regards to not even doing a proper Cut and Paste job.
The Source was Humpty Dumpty that night, and Hype Williams couldn't even put the pieces back together again.
If the Source was so concerned about the Upliftment of HipHop, they would of said, "No, No, we refuse to put this infomercial on the air" but yet, they bowed down to the advertising dollars and fueled this controversy just to promote Sprite, Lugz, and the UPN.
Of course they are going to claim that consumer don't know the politics of an awards show, but obviously they didn't either.
Culture and Politics my ass.
You can best believe they will cash in on this in the Novembers issue.
I wouldn't be surpised if they had photos of DJ quick in the Yoke hold by the LAPD.

THUGLITE WHAT'S THAT WHAT ARE YOU A HALF A MO OR WHAT? THE RATING ARE GREAT, WHAT DO YOU KNOW ANYWAY? THUGLITE |
What happened at the source awards is, I agree, standard fare at the Vet
for a Eagles game. And let's not even get into "hooliganism" in soccer, but that's apples and oranges.
No brawls at the Espy's. Nobody got mudstomped in Canton for Hall of Fame induction.
Nobody choking anyone at the Marino tribute.
The best thing about the Source Awards was the Sprite commercial with Finnesse, Beanie, Monch, and Mos Def.
The allusion to Diallo as Mos pulls his wallet from his jacket when erroneously confronted by armed police went
really beyond my expectations for a ad spot. Hats off to Sprite for allowing that, unless it slipped by em like Uncle L's
FUBU cap in the Gap spot.

Karma's A Bitch...
I work at 360 so I'll tell you this: We ain't all ass-kissing niggas BUT some of us are. I work here so I know and now I can speak freely since everybody so busy trying to save their ass (READ: find work)
Salaries:
Sheena $150 grand
selwyn $250 grand (all annually)
yvette russell $100 grand
jeff chang $75 grand
OK, Sheena, get real. you call yourself selwyn's surrogate but you are really just an ass-wipe scared office worker. since you are not educated, you should have taken the time here to actually learn how to edit articles because now you have no real world skills to get you by.
selwyn, I guess you'll survive if you continue to suck the right dicks; your long-lasting "relationship" with russell should hold you for a while. but you sold out man. i watch you walk through this office with your silk shirts unbuttoned and all yo' nipples sticking out like some punk. was it worth it?
yvette russell: You are insane. Girl , stop being so back stabbing and manipulative and take your prozac. you have no real understanding of the editorial process yet you kiss so much ass ("Boo this Boo that") that you get put on at these places. Girl, take that "headrag" off your head, eat a few samiches and get your shit together.NOW.
and for everyone: yeah, Russell sold us out. he walks through here and don't speak to a motha fucka -- but his so-called friends. and he talk about caring for black folks but he married a chinc, and he had a baby with that poor bony, inarticulate thing. wow, you are my role model.
and then selwyn hired jeff chang, another chinc (see the pattern) to run the political section. how the fuck does a non-writing chinc know what the fuck is stressing black and hispanic folks' communities. and of course, jeff hired another chinc and a white guy. so no people of color got none of those posts either.
i just work here. and i don't get fat paid. some of us were just the grunts who got shitted on while some got paid. let this be a lesson to us all.

ZEBRA u r the MORON, the only reason that the show aired is because they had sold all the advertising and DAVID MAYS was not refunding any $$$$$. So get your facts right b4 u post on here... The only reason that peeps watched was to see how that fixed that mess that aired... NEXT YEAR, they will have to do it properly.... |
Anyone who needs work, check out my site! Im also interested if anyone has pictures of xxxxxxx engaging in homosexual acts. I am willing to pay big bucks for these photos of Mr. xxxxxxx going down on XXX, Xxx X, or even Xxxx. Is there such a thing as "selling out" in bussiness? The object of the game is to get money, not to "keep it real wit da homies." If you loose your job because Russell wanted to make more money, too bad for you. Yeah he's a snake scumbag, big fucking suprise. |
willis...i dont have any photos like that...but i do know where you can hear the episode of DUDLEY on different strokes talking about getting molested by the guy from WKRP in cinncinatti (sp?)
its here : http://www.walrus.com/~suave/hall/dudley/dudley.htm |
It is sad to see 360 Hiphop fall like this. But it had to happen. Insider gets much respect for telling the truth. 360 fucked up first by firing Ronin Ro for no reason. Even tho the niggas book is being put out with a soundtrack from def jam. he told me what happened, and said selwyn hired him to work with all editors. Kris ex wanted him to do everything in the music section. Selwyn said he had to work with other editors too. Kris told Selwyn he didn't like ro doing outside work. Selwyn fired him and didn't offer a different position that would get him away from Kris. Selwyn said here's four weeks severance pay and sign a paper saying you wont sue. ro said they didn't even let him take his little 360 notebook with him when they fired him without warning. he signed the paper cause this happend when he didnt expect it and he got a sick wife and kids. Then 360 jhad his shit on their site after they kicked him out with no respect. that's why they have bad karma. they took that same hate and used it on kris ex and fired him too. and people feel that hate and dont come to the site. while 360's arguing for big salaries, Ro's still trying to find a job. I told him, don't fuck with hip hop no more. |
Wow the cat’s got his tongue back. 360 you guys just need to keep quite now. The editors who call themselves urban professionals would email people who posted negative remarks and threaten them to come to the 360 offices. Whatever! Really, what does your future hold? Even though the Source Awards were a fiasco, they plugged the Source online, the commercials are genius because of course if you live in Paris you will logon to the Source for the latest hip-hop news, and following close behind is Platform.net who continue to reach higher. Even though Tina is an s.t, hey she works hard for her money. Tina nothing personal everyone knows your business tighten it up now. |
Why did my post get edited? Every time I wrote Russell Simmons it came up XxXX, what the fuck is going one here? |
Why is my clout -14. Who the fuck is player hating? |
UE is editing my posts! They censored me from using the names DMX, Jay Z, Russell Simmons, and Lyor! What are we not allowed to talk about Russell Simmons being gay and me wanting to post gay pictures of him on the web! What is happening here! |
I'm saddened by the implication that anyone with a six figure salary at an Urban New Media company is overpaid. Why all the hate over money?
Whether you respect them or not, Selwyn and Sheena are at the top of their fields, yet there are first year associates, fresh out of school, at the major investment banks who get far more in annual compensation. Black folks doing well is a good thing, despite the fact that on this site, it has only been fodder for derision. Why are people getting upset because the top rated hip hop editors can earn a six figure salary. The rap industry is growning. What's wrong with some of us sharing the spoils. But those who direct their venom at the Sheena's and Selwyn's of this world, should understand that they still get paid less than their white counterparts at other media outlets. |

The 360/Bet thing is way more interesting topic...but check it.
Russell has been trying to sell 360 to a buyer for MONTHS. This BET thing was inevitable. Anybody and everybody knew he was looking for a buyer but Bet is the only one that had the chips.
I want UE to find the story BEHIND the story. What are the ramifications of artists like Will Smith and Puffy or label execs like Russell , investing in media ventures like 360? We've already witnessed how editorial integrity can be compromised with the David Mays/Made Men fiasco. If BET does have holdings in Vanguarde will reporting in Impact be skewed towards bet.com and now 360? If I'm not mistaken Vanguarde has some relationship with Time Warner also. With all of this conglomeration aren't we getting fed various flavors of the same shit? Can some one of you "industry" cats get us low level net junkies some real scoop? |
Hey, lets give Russell a break. Its business! I am just proud a black man could pull something like this off. Lets just stay tune and see what happens from here! A recent article in Fortune magazine quoted the president of the Black Chamber of Commerce. He said "America is only as weak as its weakest link and African Americans are the weakest link!" Now thats some shit for you. Lets prove him wrong!
Expect To Win
Deane' |
Hey Sheena
Never argue with a fool like Insider because people won't be able to tell the difference. To the others who think Russell Simmons is gay who cares? Only a punk who is not sure of his manhood would care.
I notice a lot of you cats have a problem with Made Men. What do you expect when you have a bunch of thugs exploiting you. When they were Almighty RSO, they used to roll up into the Source office and hand out beat downs on the regular. They were worse then Suge Knight |
if sheena Lester and Selwyn Hinds are at the top of their field then their "field" is the pile of shit that they call 360 that russell can't sell because its worth nothing. only the idiots at bet would buy this shitty site. Sheena is a bum who always gets fired from every job she had. selwyn is a fruit who turned the source into a pile of shit by hiring his friends who are drunks, by selling source mics for ads and by writing cover stories that said puffy was real hip hop. These two are assholes who make all black people look bad. if you support these assholes you say, this is the best black people can do. and that's not true. these jerks all hire each other at whatever job they can lie their way into, because no one else will hire them. when selwyn is thrown out of 360, hell have to live on his savings. no one but a clueless white company will want to deal with his village voice princeton i'm better than all you other niggas bullshit. but he wont be at 360 long enough to make that 250 gs. so fuck all you assholes who say we as black people should support these inferior poseurs |
If the journalism displayed at 360 is the best Black folks have to offer I have to get out of this biz. The writings terrible, even Upski who is a good writer is writing terrible articles for them. The name dropping thing is not working Sheena, most of the cats assembled at 360 have big names in the industry but when was the last time they wrote a good story--by any standards, black, white, latin. I have no vested interest in anything put up on UE, but if any of these chat board participants can honestly say that 360 is the future of hip hop journalism then we all need to reconsider why we chose this profession. Let's be honest here. |
I challenge all you good people who insist on issuing disparaging remarks about the writers at 360 to apply for a job or start your own website with stunning articles. Selessie who the hell are u writing for? What are your accomplishments that we can all somehow benefit from? Me thinks a lot of you good people are jealous because you never had an opportunity to shine. You're angry because you would love to make 150 thousand dollars a year. Some of you other cats wish you knew how to hustle and get some of this good money that's floating around cyberspace.. |
This is probably the last Source Awards we're going to see. And good riddance. The show was tacky and terrible. Time for real hip hop to represent. |
OK,
1) Philly is aggro city. You want a fight, go to a game there. Boston is love and peace compared to Philly.
Everyone I know has gotten into a fight at either a Phillies or Eagles game, including a former Marine Recon guy who got jumped. They thought they were going to kick his ass, because he was 5'7" and 140. WRONG. He was crazy Irish.
And yes, they have a court at the Vet. Because he was brought in front of the judge there.
This year, two Catholic High Schools got into a massive, drunken brawl at the Vet. How do high school kids get served beer at a baseball game is beyond me.
2) I have no love for BET, but it's not like Simmons sold 360 to Rupert Murdoch. Unless Oprah wants to get into the web publishing business, BET was the only logical prospect. Working for Bob Johnson is not like working for David Duke or Rudy Giuliani.
It seems like the best deal going.
3)Hating on Asians or any other non-white person living in this country is amazingly stupid. Who cares if Simmons wife is Asian. The kids still come out black, for one. Two, should he have done like everyone else and found a blonde farm girl? I could care less, but it's ignorant to hate on someone's race, and especially someone of color, even if that color isn't yours.
4) Willis,
You can't just accuse people of engaging in sex acts or saying you have evidence of such acts if you don't. It's called libel and if UE doesn't edit it, they will be sued.
Even asking the question is really stupid unless your father's name is Johnny Cochran
5) Senior editors make six figures in every medium. Your average NY TV reporter, except for NY 1, gets six figures to walk in the door.
So those figures may be a little inflated, but to get less than $80K for a senior job is pointless.
If you think 360 has underpaid you, leave. You have a skill set companies will kill to get. Brothers have no more or less ethics than anyone else.
6) The show reeked of playa hate. The editing is nothing that would have left John Woo's or Tsui Hark's studio and Jackie Chan cut that crap out when Stanley Tong and Sammo Hung started to direct his films. Only the old school kung-fu stories which confuse the tongs and
the secret societies between 1860-1911 are that bad.
So let's not insult HK film, which I love because it's nice to see heroes who aren't white and still competant.
I get tired of black self-hate at any level, like the moron from the Black Chamber of Commerce.
Or the riot at the Source show. Look, an awards show is where adults go, not thugs. Could you imagine this at the Players Ball? Do you think pimps would show out like that? In their finest gear?
If the Players Ball, which celebrates real criminals, can be conducted without violence, and that's a room full of beefs, why can't the Source awards?
7) Willie, most of us DO write on websites, at least the writers do. My goal isn't so much to make $150K as to do work I can show anyone.
Criticism is not playa hate. Most of it tries to be constructive. |
Off the subject but of interest.

Russel Simmons exit strategy
http://www.inside.com/story/Story_Cached/0,2770,8968_9_16_1,00.html |
Corporate,
I completely disagree with you. Firstly, do you really think that this whole ordeal appeals and titilates white people only? HELL NO! People of all races and color are engaged by drama and exploit and this was better than a healthy dose of the National Enquirer.
Ask yourself this...white or black in thought...did the people of the Source Awards, not act ignorant, violent and idiotic?
Hmmmm....boy if you're trying to stick up for something...this wasn't the best argument. If nothing else, this reinforced that the people making hip hop music today are the ignorant and the violent. Those following this trend are merely lemmings looking for a cliff. Please give credit to minds that know and understand that this show is not a reflection of all black people, any more than when Toronto Arena rioted after Guns and Roses blew the concert, that metal fans are ignorant and violent.
|
We know that those individuals getting acting ignorant werent a reflection of us as a whole but when these images are broadcast to people who only know black people from what they get from the media. this is a black eye to the black community as a whole. It only reinforces their negative view of black people. It enforces the policies put out to attempt to keep us second class citizens. It sets policy on the monies going to educate black children. It reinforces discriminatory hiring practices. These ignorant images are powerful. And those skillful enough to utilize them in the major media will use them to justify policy aganst us. The violence and mysogony in rap aint going no where it is merely a reflection of the environment these individuals come up in some of the stores are genuine some are made up It will end when the major media (Hollywood) stops putting out violent and mysogonst material. |
White kids can riot and raise hell all they want their parents control the resources, media outlets, ect..
Who do you think is running the country now, where do you think all those hippies, protestors and malcontents of the 60's are today. They are running things, they got a hair cut, brought a armani suit and became yuppies. |

we keep talking about negative images of african-americans and how it affects our perception.
well what about that tv show COSBY. remember how african americans were portrayed then, very positively. now did that have any effect on us? no. Did it make middle america view us as doctors and lawyers? no.
we can not worry about anyone elses perception or stereotype of us.
|
Yea i guess its alright to portray a group of people as ignorant, violent, stupid. It wont affect joe schmoe in the ghetto who's world revolves around checking out rap city for the latest video, or chillin on the corner smoking a blunt. But for those of us who are worldly and actually travel outside of the country or various places in this country where there is not a large black population those negative images are what the world percieves of us, thoes images also effect how our children see themselves so they begin to emulate and act like these knuckleheads, they begin to not care how their public image is. My mother used to tell me that I am not only representing myself I am representing my family. |
Back in the days when i was a shortie. I used to love looking at martial arts movies. Me growing up in the black community and not having any asian people in my community used to think every asian i saw knew martial arts, my whole perception of asians was formed by me looking at martial arts films. What is the world thinking about us. |
Corporate,
At this point...I think it's less important to think about how the world sees...than how we see ourselves....
|
Satan,
Crack kills and you're about two steps from hell's door. I never said that 360 advances any cause nor did I even discuss what they do or don't do to help/hurt black people. What I commented on was someone declaring that people be fired. I take offense at your calling me a "lazy ho bag" as I am a hard working sister who wishes to see us address real issues and try to stay away from the petty name calling and in fighting which gets us no where but the source awards last week. I do believe that in your rush to write without thinking that you confused my post with someone else's. Im not going back and forth with you on the name calling bit cause again, I think you confused me with your mother so take your ass out on flushing and tell it to her face. |
Plus Satan,
Sure you would vibe with Lisa. It seems that the both of you are cut from the same bitter, angry, foul mouthed, dirty cloth. Let go of some of that and you just may find and be able to give real happiness. |
Who uses "bag of shit" anymore? Satan sounds like a white boy. Maybe Lisa is too cause they sure like to spew a lot of divide and conquer stuff. And Lisa's constant us of gay references sounds like someone whose fighting really hard to stay in the closet. |
And Motherfucker (sorry for name calling but you've pissed me off), I don't even know how to put someone's name of the no buzz list. If I did I would list someone I knew and liked cause I believe that list creates buzz. |
As one of the people who Sheena Lester would take that figurative bullet for (and vice versa) perhaps I am biased in saying that she's done nothing to earn the level of personal attack she's gotten on this site. But so what, that's my girl.
Her career has been unsullied by the lapses in integrity that has brought done many a career in this industry. She's done her thing as a journalist for most of the last decade. How many people can boast of putting together a hip-hop even of the historical import of "A Great Day in Hip-Hop?" There are far too many people to attack in this industry for real, not imagined, transgressions against journalism for you to waste your time fucking with Sheena, who really doesn't deserve it.
As far as 360 working with BET, why not see that as the historical alliance of two powerful black companies instead of trying to knock it? There's so much criticism about why black companies don't pool their assets, now they've done it. I think that should be applauded.
BET.com people don't care about what 360 people have allegedly said, which is suspect anyway since few people at 360 even know anyone at BET.com. The hardworking, non New York based (therefore uncool by some standards) are too busy trying to make the site comprehensive and informative for the African-American public it serves. I know that's not as sexy as hanging out by the open bar all night, but there it is.
One more thing: Other than for work-related purposes, Sheena doesn't listen to the Hot Boyz.
|
I agree with you miss thing up to a point. Sheena Lester is mad cool and done a good job.
360hiphop is marketed for a non-black demographic of young urban culture consumers. That's where they feel the money lies.
BET.com recognizes that and wants a part of that. I'll put race aside if you do. It's a business deal that doesn't have any color to it besides green. |
The debate about journalistic integrity, salaries, and who's Uncle Tomming who is always an entertaining one, for it provides ample opportunity for name calling, posturing, and resentful (and comical) soap-boxing. However, when judged on the merits of simple grammar and the ability to write a simple lucid, intelligible sentence on this message board, Steve Gilliard is the only one who should not be ashmaned to call himself a journalist. Ms. Lester, I do not think it is unfair of readers to expect journalists like yourself with such "clout" to at least be a decent writer. |
Wow, a whole lotta spitfire in this convo.
Starfucker (I knew there was something about you. . .)
Listen! As a black man in America, i have better things to worry about than how we are portrayed in the media. It's a given that we are targets of mentacide. (new word).
I could care less about 360 or Russell Simmons or the Source, or anything corporate. The only say-so I have in their corporation is product boycott. They are going to get their money regardless, if I buy their shit or not.
I could care less about peoples' sexual orientation or corporate liaisons or deserved/undeserved payrolls.
What I do care about is how we adopted this European way of thinking towards each other, calling folks chinks, niggas, spics, punjabs, or other dry shit labels.
The American people we want to emulate are the outcasts from European societies: the convicts, the thieves, the murderers, the rebels, the harlots, etc.
I have no time for name-calling. My people, your people are dying from media emulation. And all that's on your collective consciences is how much loot you/they make so you be like those outcasts.
They've already won without raising a hand. They've figured out, "All we have to do is treat some better than others and they'll kill each other." Hey, they have a great fucking strategy! (Did I sound Caucasian with that interjection right there.?)
What I do care about is the division of Black minds. Yes, we have re-entered the jiggaboo, Step N Fetchin' era. Only this time, it's more broad based: from media to music to sports to everything that makes money. Why are we in this state of mind? Lack of self-esteem!
Too many deadbeatdads, too many hoed out moms: all dying to escape the physical world of poverty with little pleasures without thinking of the consequences. Too many insecure Black males out to impress too many materialistic hoochies cause bodies to fly and youth to die. (As drab as it sounds, it's the truth.)
What we need to do is using this site (another white corporation?) and other sites like it to spread knowledge. I want to know what's the hottest underground (read: minority) mag out. I want to know who's got that surefire on wax, not based on greased palms. I want to support all that's good within our society (read: minority). In the meantime, you can keep the BAD. I've already seen too much of it.
Now. . . who heard me? Whose gonna clue me in?

Now, the rest of the world, just imagine if mo' cats even thought before they spoke. . . |
Mr. Lasana,
What is the "something about me" you thought...just curious....
We are definitely on the same side. Life is too short (I'm a musician/vocalist/artist...so that doubles my undertoe status anyway) to worry about how bullshit people see you, what is far more important is how we see each other.
|
satan,
The only reason you know so much about Ronin's situation is, well, you are Ronin, right? or are you Marc Flores? i mean, i can see you talking to Ronin, holding conversations with yourself. yeah, which personality are you today? the humble white guy wearing the too-tight Century 21 slacks? or are you the alcoholic falling off the wagon? maybe you're the guy who got fired from MTV after three weeks? just a month after being fired from 360? all anyone needs to do to get you to shut up is just print your address on here for mr. suge knight, right? maybe the HR files of the dozen companies that have fired your ass will be kind enough to lend us that.
|
Naw, Starfucker, what I mean is that your view intrigue me tremendously. It's hard nowadays to run into folks with a levelhead.
I read your stuff on the other Source article. Keep up the good work.
You're a musician/vocalist/artist?
Great, so am I.
Shameless Plug 4: I'm in the NYC area with 160/170 tracks just waiting for vocals.
Let's talk! Do me some get at on www.adwin.lasana@att.net |
Peace.
Well with all this discussion about how the rest of the world views Hip Hop culture and Rap music, the best way to tell is to look at the US Weekly, or Variety, or Hollywood Reporter, or the L.A. or NY Times, etc.
For example, I give you this from today's Variety...>
Paramount is finalizing the boy of a comedy feature pitch from screenwriter Bradley Allenstein...about the rise and fall of a white rapper who thinks he's black. Pic has a working title of "Pimp Pasty" and will be produced by Walter Latham (Kings of Comedy)...
Pimp Pasty. Please. Help.
|
Running scared,
That was a nice letter, but no I'm not Ronin or Marc Flores. I'm a friend of his and all that shit you're talking is just that, bullshit. Ronin's a great writer, and nothing any of you say will change that shit. And I'm just as good as he is, bitch. So try to avoid the real issue about 360 by trying to insult ro. You just proved my point. And 360 is still a shitty ass site. So whichever asshole from ubo or 360 wrote that shit, just keep buying the nigga's books and subscribing to the major magazine I work for. |
And for the record, dickhead: 360 fired him for no reason, and he was happy to leave too, and homeboy bounced from MTV, and was happy to leave there as well. Cause he's not like you. he can make money without having to kiss Selwyn's ass. And Ro's not white, either. which all goes to show how much you dickheads know. If he read this, I'm sure the nigga would just laugh. the reason you flipped is because the shit I wrote about 360, and Bet is true. and you assholes don't wanna have the truth embarrass yall. so like I said, keep riding on homeboy's nuts for his books and stealing his styles and keep riding on mine and calling me for freelance work. |
Running Scared,
one last thing. from your letter, you sound like someone who is on Ronin's dick. why else would you keep such close tabs on homie's career? you know his name, "Marc Flores." You know how he dresses ("slacks"). You know his personal history, which he never tried to hide ("alcoholic"). And you know he worked at 360 and left after "three weeks." It seems to me you are obsessed with the nigga. You actually sound like some dickhead from 360, or soulpurpose, who spent a career trying to be like him. for the record, bitch (cause I suspect you're a female, one he wouldn't dick down): homeboy used to drink and gave it up and wrote about it in vibe to try to get other kids to give it up too. unlike you drug addicts and drunks who get high during meetings and come up with a shitty ass site like 360. what ronin did to help is more important than anything you assholes at 360 or other sites will ever do. all you do is kiss russell's ass, or write gossip like andy platnum and say def jam albums are "hot!" as for death row, homie was the only one MAN enough to actually put his integrity on the line. all of you suckers kept writing stories that said suge was a hero. homeboy wrote the one true classic hip hip book and you suckers, like jazzbo at 360, have to steal info from it for your articles in spin or vibe or xxl or the source. Running scared, you proved my point. you greedy internet-come-lately motherfuckers will say and do anything to try to build a name, including attack niggaz who got nothing to do with this here. that just shows how much of a bitch ass nobody you really are. I agree with the person on this board who said big names don't mean shit. when was the last time you big names wrote a good story? |
I really want to thank Afro, Reggie, Starfucker, Miranda and especially Adwin for trying to turn this conversation back to topics that matter and for providing me with some insight in the process. Hopefully, we can all learn from those who conduct themselves with intelligence and dignity on this site. |
Hello everyone
My name is Marc Flores. I write books as Ronin Ro. It's come to my attention that certain unnamed individuals have been bandying the so-called facts of my life on this site-- under the pretense of wanting to "help" me out since I'm ostensibly their "boy," or in response to people who claim to be "friends" of mine.
I have also, unfortunately, had to read posts that tried to insult everything about me.
I want to say that I am not the individual who is posting as 'Satan,' and want nothing to do with you. You're obviously someone I know and speak with on the telephone, but for you to divulge confidential elements of our conversations on this site, for any reason, is fucked up.
The description of my departure from 360 was grossly exaggerated. Selwyn Hinds was a gentleman, as was Kris Ex. Sheena Lester, a writer/editor I admire, does not deserve any of the criticism being leveled at her. If you're trying to "look out" for me, desist from attacking anyone and connecting my name in any way, shape or form to your posts. I don't need you or anyone trying to look out for me. Anyone who truly knows me already understands that I am more than willing and capable of handling any problem facing me, without anyone's assistance. Including incidents that may arise out of anything I've written. If you saw me on BET with Tavis Smiley, all I can say is, "Don't believe everything you see on television." Sometimes it's better not to let them see you coming.
As for my "not having a job"? I'm working on my next novel, thank you, and trying to write it in such a way that everyone who visits this site, including those who dislike me, will enjoy it. That is my Job. To be an author. For everyone. Other writer and editors make more money, and have "names," but I'm quite confident with my achievements, and my resume, and believe that, in the future, when hip hop is discussed, my few works may be included on lists of some of the most relevant, definitive, and important works created by so-called 'hip-hop journalists."
And to Running Scared? I'm sorry you don't like me, but I understand, from reading reviews of my work, that, try as I might, I can't please everyone. All I can say to the misinformation you posted is this: let's hook up a meeting to discuss your allegations, complaints, and grievances. If I've offended you, and you want to attack me on this site, I'd like to meet, hear you out, then see if I can't change your opinion of me.
|
A lot of y'all got off the subject and are actin' like a bunch of whinin' ass BITCHES!!! Listen to you guys! "You must be a white boy!" What a great point! Russell thinks this or that and has a "chinc" wife (it's chink - get your slurs right, dumbass). I swear to God, some of y'all are worse than the niggas at the Source awards. A man tries to read up on some inside shit, and instead has to sift through a bunch of anonymous muggs personally insulting anonymous people! How's that for an (oxy)moron. Muggs need to get back to business, and then maybe you could sell 20 million dollar ice cubes to eskimos, too. And please, people, I know some of y'all work for media companies, so check your fucking grammar. |
The fact that anyone would actually produce a posting here that uses language such as "chink" and "kike" and "mc..", is absolutely disgusting and disgraceful. There is absolutely no excuse for such absolute and blatant racism. This only confirms the behavior that was displayed at the Source Awards continues to live and breathe like an ugly cancer...right here on these boards.
Clean out the closets ladies and gentlemen, you will live longer and happier. For a Jewish/Spanish mixture such as myself, this is very disheartening. Come on people, let's be a better example than that. |
That explains it star. with a jewish/spanish mixture such as yourself. you could care less how a pure black brother like myself and my community are represented in the major media. I kinda knew you wasnt black from your previous posts. |
I guess since its your jewish side that controls the media. Your could care less how the black community is looked upon and disrespected because of minstrels, and jigaboo images that are dominating the media representing black america |
Mister Ro,
Thank you for setting the record straight and hopefully discouraging the ignorant and abusive comments made on your behalf.
Mister Corporate,
I don't believe that one's racial background or ethnicity prohibits them from trying to understand the plight of another. That is a choice. Though I am a straight black woman I too have been horrified and disgusted at much of the homophobic and unnecessary name calling that is prevalent on these posts.
I do believe that after 400 years of racist oppression by whites in this country, we as black people should prejudge. I also believe that with all the anger that has built up over the years because of white oppression, we're bound to get a little raunchy with them at times so I am not goind to defend or denounce that.
Still on this site, the childish and mean-spirited name calling, personal attacks and attempts to encourage unemployment (ie recommended firings of other brothers and sisters by Lisa Warren and Satan), is mostly directed at Black people and in no way reflects sensible judgement. In fact, much of it reflects and supports how we are depicted by major media. Here my boy, as in much of the diaspora, we are our own worst enemy. |
Star, why does one form of bigotry offend you more than another? I saw nothing in your posts about the sexist and homophobic name calling that is in many of the posts on this site. Nor did your post talk about the constant use of the word nigga on this site. On a site that tends to mostly deal with Black American and/or Black American related issues, it is quite arrogant of you to only focus on those that affect your white background. |
Ok, it's ignance prevention day.
1)This is America. The one drop rule applies in full. So if you aren't white, well, you are not white. You people know this. I don't care what you are, if you are not white, uncle charlie will treat you like you are 100% not white.
There are NO 100 percent white people in America or 100 percent black. So lets cut this out.
2)The Jews may make the shows, but it's the same white people who run this country which run the media. Name the Jewish newscaster on the evening news.
You know, they don't draft black people to play zip coon. They volunteer, often after the same college education you get.
Saying the Jews made Martin Lawrence or Steve Harvey act like an idiot on TV is ridiculous. How come Eriq La Salle and Andre Braugher didn't fall for that trap? Are they not black as well?
There is no "you must lose your dignity" clause in TV contracts. People grovel for those jobs and are happy to cash the paychecks.
3) Let's be honest. There is NO consensus on using derivatives of nigga in our community. Some people don't, some do. It's not a term I use for other black people, but it is a term of derision. Like every other group uses. You wouldn't hesistate to call someone trailer trash in a heartbeat, so let's not get uppity.
4)Homophobia is the great black blindspot. You have people talking about homophobia as a disease, with so many black men in prison.
Please. They don't send women to Green Haven for sex.
It's hypocracy at the lowest level. The older I get, the more I realize that anyone talking about how much they hate gays is not too cool with anyone else. I don't bother to comment on open stupidity. And knowing my people, lectures on are pretty much pointless. Even though some of the biggest recorded homophobes play for both teams.
You can wrap it in Jesus or ignorance and it's still wrong to hate on someone for their race. I don't think you've turned in your Midori tapes, right? And don't even act like you don't know who she is.
And you know it ain't all guy-girl, right?
5) Calling for people to get fired in an open forum is totally unprofessional. You can discuss their work and their ethics, but to say they should lose their job makes you look small and foolish.
Everyone has beefs, trust me. But they restrict them to e-mail or full out attacks on a website. You choose. |
Leroy Street, I'm feelin' you totally.
360 inside beefs are not what I wanna read up on. All those involved need to trade e-mail addresses and holler on yo' own time.
Just as the Source exposed us as "rapping ass ignorant niggas," this media website is doing the same thing.
Git it together, people. Or else, it sounds like you all actually missed the plane to Pasadena. |
Hey dont get it twisted Steve, I have nothing aganst black entertainers doing their thing whether they protray ignorant self hating thugs, or stefen fethens, or bufoons. What I want from black media is a balanced representation of how they protray black people in America I want the good and the bad. I am starting to see more black men and women playing more prominent roles which pleases me but the scales are still tipped toward the ignorant side. I said I was a pure black brotha ( metaphor ) I am sure if i was to shake my family tree a some white slave owner would fall out from a couple of generations ago or some indian would fall out ( you know how older black folks like to claim indian in the family ). I know we have come a long way but we have such a long way to go, Its already known that most of you so called industry types are nothing but a bunch of ho's ready to sell that ass to the highest bidder and align yourself with the biggest pimp. |
Oh yea Steve

Since there are no 100% white people does that mean that white people dont treat white people like they are white. |
Angie,
This is also Starfucker...just another name....I assure you, no form of bigotry offends me more than another...ALL FORMS OF BIGOTRY offend me. Homophobia offends me equally. I have many friends who have left me due to AIDS related illness, and many friends who are gay, I myself am bisexual, and proud.
As for Mr. Corporate, I'm so sorry. I don't think you may realize it now, but you aren't helping yourself. I am a mixed person of cultures, if not quite so much race, my great grandfather was Afro Cuban (that's why my Dad is such a great drummer even to this day..we are a family of musicians). It is my hope and dream someday to strip down all of the "color" of people, and get right on down to the actual soul. I realize that the world sees me as white, and perhaps that gives me a priviledge to speak freer. I don't deny seeing that, but I assure you...all the ugly in the world..is very real to me, and I assure you, believe it or not, I do care. I care how all people are represented in the media of this country, as I know it is a merciless machine.
I also thought...by the way that this wasn't a board discussing African/American topics as Angie formerly mentioned, but a board for those who work in the "urban entertainment world," which we all do..including myself, and it's my 9-5.
Oh, and Angie...the word nigga isn't cool either..unless....you're John Lennon. |
One last thing..
That is from the most femminist song I've ever heard...I hope you've heard it... |
You know white people don't much like each other, either.
Give them half a chance and they'll turn each other like pack rats.
They don't pat each other on the back for being white, if they did, we'd still be slaves.
They just put a foot on us because we aren't white.:-)
And as far as selling out goes, a lot of people see money and lose their minds. |
hey Mr./Mrs Star what ever you would like to be addressed. African Americans can claim mixed heritage till out faces turn blue we are the truely multiracial society but you know what. It gets us nowhere. My family resembles every shade of the specturm when it comes to black people in america but you know what they dont brag about some obscure white person in their family tree. And so what you have a black person in your family a few generations ago that spoke spanish ( why do we give black people that speak any european language but english some exotic name ) l am sure you look white, you emphasize your whiteness, and you take full advantage of you whiteskin priveledge until its convienent to shake the black person out of the family tree (like now), and since when did sexual preference become a crutch for someone to lean on who cares what you do in your bedroom my homie Daquan likes sexin fat women should he get special treatment because he likes fat women, gay white men are no diffrent then any other white men in their view of the world of color look at J Edgar Hoover |
Corporate,
You need to try Hare Krishna or something man, no one is "bragging about anything relating to my family...I'm just telling it like it is..." This paranoid "using my white privelleges in the world thing..." please reserve those comments for someone looking to come against you with aggression. I'm just a musician man, I have no interest in the bullshit you perpetrate.
For the record...nearly every member of my family speaks Spanish..and shaking the black person "conveniently out of the tree..." who the fuck are you to make that comment...would you like me to tell you how convenient it is for you to use me as a scapegoat for your malcontent at God knows what situations...
I am not here to address your ill will, sir Corporate/Ms. Corporate however you like to address yourself, and I am appalled that in year 2000, you'd do yourself and me no better service. Kindly find someone worthy of picking on, namely someone who actually has a problem with race and color, such as yourself...it's obvious you have self hatred problems or you wouldn't find the need to pick on me.
I am here to address the issues of the Source Awards, black, white or whatever..everyone on this board knows that the attitudes and behavior was absolutely horrific, so please...don't address me anymore, and take your hatred elsewhere. I notice in other articles, you've made many good points...stick to the positive, no one here is looking for a problem with you.
|
Oh yeah and one more thing..
My references to my sex life were addressed at Angie, who was inquiring as to why I have made no references on the boards as to the homophobic blips and quotes...
|
It's such a shame that those boys and girls couldn't behave themselves at the Source Awards...I guess those studio thugs have been listening to their own albums again...
...but really, was anyone surprised...what more can you expect from individuals who rap about bitches, cars, and jewelry as if this were CB4...we've come nowhere in hip hop and we're going nowhere fast if this is any indicator... |
man, i was at the source awards and that shit was fun as hell. you shoulda seen the look on quick's face when me an my crew yoked his bitch as from the neck. word, hoo hah. |
i've jus about read all of the posts on here and i must say with all the name calling, racial slurs, and announcing everyone's bizness, i must say i feel alot of love in this room.
but seriously, i argee with what was said earlier that i also came on here to find out some inside shit or at least hear responses about the shitty ass source awards, which i did hear but not near as much as the 360.com (which i've seen like once or twice) and bet.com merger. please folks keep that shit amongst yall'selves and not here. and to dick strong. why yall snatch quick up? dont tell me it was over that beef he had wit whose his name or whateva, the shit happened so long ago i cant even remeber who or what da beef was about!
now as for the source awards, yea it was awful, yea it was a total mockery to anyone representing real hip hop (or black folks for that matter) but regardless of the fact that thier the main reason why i dont buy hip hop magazines period(that made men debacle still gives me the chills to this very day), and whether yall hate 'em or not, the sad part about it is until someone comes up with some thing better its all we've got so basically until that special someone is able to step up and put forth a respectable representation of true inclusive hip hop program, i'm afraid we'll have to tough it out wit david mays and da gang.
peace |
They should have aired "The Source Awards" show in its entirely, bleep out the swear words, put the innocent faces out of focus like they do in the fox television show "Cops",keep it real like Corporate N wrote.Might have helped out their ratings. When was the last time a riot broke out at the country music awards?Faith Hill kicking Wyonna Judd's ass......imagine that. |
