Politicallyblack.com is a site run by two republicans out of D.C. that promised to provide "hard-hitting, cutting-edge, envelope-pushing big-up weekly review of political news and happenings" and hoped to revolutionize Black political discussion online. They sold the site for the price of a Range Rover to a company that was going public. What exactly is the purpose of a site that uses a demeaning logo of a black butler serving dinner to Capitol Hill?
 Roderick Conrad, the co-founder and CEO of politicallyblack.com and part-time Larry Blackmon imitator, was the director of a DC think tank, called Project 21, which spent its time trying to figure out how to repackage David Duke styled political zealotry and sell it in urban communities. His partner and COO, Charles D. Ellison, is a former speechwriter for Newt Gingrich. Given the backgrounds of the companies founders and the GOP's desire for increased inclusion you would think PoliticallyBlack.com access to and coverage of the GOP convention would have been stellar. Personal interviews with J.C. Watts or even ousted speaker of the house Newt "Divorce them when their sick" Gingrich.
What the site provided instead was a stale review of a press conference by Al Sharpton and Armstrong Williams. Entertainment Tonight had harder-hitting convention coverage and more in-depth analysis of the issues facing voters than politicallyblack.com. These guys are up on what's hip too. Their section, Minority News Daily, mistakenly refers to Brian McKnight as a rapper. Most of the content consists of links to other sites articles. Or articles that have been repurposed for politicallyblack.com, one of the worst articles on the site, is an article on mandatory sentencing,it was literally ripped directly from Marie Claire Magazine and repositioned as an original work with minor credits to the original.
The site looks like Marion Barry designed it on the pipe. Apparently, someone lied to the design team at politicallyblack.com and told them that as long as there is bold, centered text on a page the design was hot to death. They even present the time in military format at the top of the page. We expect to see a "Do Now" assignment next. We even tried to buy a t-shirt we could rock at NABJ for kicks, but the store was closed.
The site has content area names like "Put A X On It", "Legislative Lowdown" and "Politics On The Groove" in an attempt to sound cool but come off as condescending. It's sounds like your father trying to sound cool. The site, which touts itself as the source for "mad insight, mad analysis and mad politics", would only be appealing to someone with mad vision problems.
 At height of the Internet valuation madness they sold the company for $55,000 and 30,000 shares of Netivation.com common stock. PoliticallyBlack.com was a cheap pawn in Netivation's IPO roll-up strategy that amounted to enough money for Roderick and Charles to buy a Tony Brown pre-paid legal card.

This site has the absolute most garbage design of any "urban" play out. It sucks major ass, and seems to like it that way. One of their editors, who goes by the name Wise and is actually "mad" cool and "mad" funny, seems to spend an inordinate amount of time hanging out at okayplayer.com. I don't blame him when home site looks as bad as PoliticallyBlack.com. Am I the only one who thinks that's a dumb ass url, too? |

Politically Black is another situation of right concept poor execution. I know how hard it can be getting a dot com off the ground, but I think that we have to have folks that are going to put out compelling content and are going make a sincere effort to keep the things that we have.
I get so tired of hearing about folks selling out over what amounts to chump change...
Most traditional Black media outlets do not understand or wish to understand the Internet and its potential to inform the Black masses. It will be those mainly in Generations X and Y to use the Internet to drag Black folks into the 21st century (most likely kicking and screaming the whole time.)
There was something in the Fast Company magazine that related to that with Dr. Nat Irwin of Wake Forest. He mentioned that either we are going to fall further behind, advance in fits and starts or experience a boom of economic activity and self-reliance.
I think its time for us to pull together a conference focusing with Black folks and New Media (Having it here in Atlanta would be nice!)
If Calcanis can do that Rising Tide Conference every year, at least we can pull together and look at this new landscape from a social, political and economic vantagepoint. There is a brother that I respect in the tech arena who always refers to this as environment as "the final frontier." We need to craft a strategy for the larger Black community (and not another myopic discussion about Napster!)

Well, Urban Expose is learning a thing or two about its audience, I guess. The response for this story, posted yesterday, was underwhelming. No one wants to read about this sort of company. The UE readership is more interested in seeing reports on the flossy, high living imbeciles who run high profile sites, but know jack shit about the fundamentals of the balance sheet. Another story may be needed, and quickly! if UE wants to maintain the momentum that the site has built up with little advertising and strong word of mouth. |

Y'all want to talk about politics... how about doing a story on how the media is attempting to skulpt our view of the issues of the day and who we should vote for -- instead of just reporting the news, stating the facts and letting us decide for ourselves.
But... then again UE would not write a story on that because they are doing the same thing in this so-called Urban newmedia scene. They want us to hate the sites they slammed here. They also want us to jock the sites they covet here.
There is a big bias toward Vanguarde properties on UE. Many think it may be because Vanguarde is either buying UE or because Vanguarde is already behind the site. Either way... an alledged ex-Vanguarde (seemed to be) insider already ranted on this site about all of the Vanguarde properties and the bad state they were in. They gave names and examples that should be great leads for a slew of UE stories. If UE was not jockin Vanguarde (for whatever political reason) there would have been at least one UE story generated by that expose.

I'm as suspicious as the next man as to why UE isn't up in Vanguarde's business. I look at it as being a matter of time--either they brewing something as we speak, or they're going to be exposed as nothing but a Vanguarde shill. Then all the sites that UE has defecated on will have a field day retaliating.

but . . . the point has been made that a serious political website, for the "urban" audience, is greatly needed . . . some of their links are pretty good, i.e. the one that tracks campaign contributions, etc.
anyone feel like volunteering their visual services to them? and of course, they need some real political writers, of which there are dozens, if not hundreds of very well respected black commentators and reporters out there . . . maybe they can poach them from the nation or the village voice . . .

Guy, I gotta chime in on politicallyblack.com. As a journalist and writer, I use the net more for information than entertainment, and if I needed to do research for a political story, this site would be one of the places I'd come for info. Sure, it may not be slick and hip. But I'm about gathering information. I was only there for about 15 minutes but this place is a clearinghouse for African American-related stories involving politics. There's a gang of info there, ranging from data sources on the Hill, to what various political leaders are thinking about us--as well as editorials from around the country on the subject. UE's review was typical in its slam approach, and that's what works for them. But digging deeper into the site there's a ton of valuable resources there. From what I saw, it's not a forum for Black Republicans or right-wingers; it's a place to become educated about what's going on in politics from both sides of the aisle. It seems to me that most people who flamed the site really didn't look around there. Or maybe they just don't give a fuck about politics or independent thinking. |

I went to PoliticallyBlack after reading your post. While the design is weak, it does provide a wealth of information. Still not sure why would use a servant image as their logo, but getting past that, there is valuable information there. But accuracy or fairness has never been a concern of UE. |
Mgr27Robinson, I can see how people might see the logo as a demeaning servant, but for me, since the site's run by Blacks(?) and the tray holds a replica of the U.S. Capitol, I perceived the logo simply to be a clever play on a Black site "serving up" Capitol Hill issues for readers.
I don't know the cats who started the site and I'm no Republican but I'm glad there's a place where I can check in on politics that's slanted towards Black interests. If nothing else UE is enlightening me about a lot of sites out there I'd otherwise might never have found--which is a stumbling block about the Net. Plus, I grudgingly admit that their mean-spirited critiques raise the bar on content and creativity. |
Just because the site is run by black people doesn't justify a racist, 1930ish Al Jolsonish logo. As far as the website being off the beaten track in terms of what the content focus is here, when was it stated that this site would be strictly for entertainment sites? I think that all of these sites need to be touched on, be it negative or positive. It really wouldn't hurt to put up some success stories in regards to the urban market. All of this negativity makes me wonder: Is there someone behind this site with a divide and conquer strategy in mind? I am off to the Hamptons with mom and pop!

Just so u good people know, the logo used by politically black was meant to symbolize, we as Black folks being 'served' political issues. While the design may not be the best, it has indeed been an insightful source of information. Also Roderick Conrad is an independent, not a republican. I recall reading an interview where he specifiaclly stated that Black people should not be beholden to any party and should focus on issues that mean something to them. Charles Ellison who was at one time a chief speech writer for Newt Gingrich in no way shares the conservative ideas of his boss. He did however come away knowing alot about the way Republicans approach an issue. UE, you guys were way off base in dissing politicallyblack.com. Next time do better research. |
Willie Brown works for politicallyblack, without a doubt. If that logo was meant to symbolize blacks being served politics, couldn't it have been done in another fashion? Give me a break. The logo itself makes the whole site a joke, whether the content is good or not. Why don't you use a man shining shoes, and justify that as "walking blacks through politics", or how about Aunt Jamima, and use the same saying " serving blacks politics". There were many other plays you could have used, and that is probably why the site hits has jumped from 200 hits a month to 2000 since UE posted an article about the site. I do think that type of site is needed, and I do think the site is filled with information. It is just obvious that it is designed by two guys that are out of touch...The Poll Train? This is almost as bad as Onelevel.com's defamation of Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), the revolutionary leader. politicallyblack.com is presently undergoing a severe and debilitating transition, and is in the process of finding another potential buyer or investor - preferably one who is Black. If that does not happen by month's end, a new strategy will be implemented. This transition has occured for some time now, and is the reason behind our inability to be as effective as we desire. This fact is what more than likely drove Urban Expose towards the bomb drop. Urban Expose has more than likely caught wind of this, without taking the necessary amount of time or effort to thoroughly research the issue. Constructive criticism is needed in the world of Internet business - that is why UE is an essential pulication. However, what is the overall purpose of that criticism if it is not researched and if it only conveys half the picture. But, what else to expect from fellow colleagues in the Black internet world - we are all like vultures surveying the carcass, aren't we? Whereas our White counterparts constantly exercise collaboration and consolidation, we continue to devise unique methods whereby we persist to destroy one another. Crispus Attucks you say? Speaking on behalf of myself and my name, Charles D. Ellison has been a registered Independent for nearly 2 years. He is neither liberal nor conservative: he is whatever suits him, and could give little care to how he is perceived or ideologically boxed due to the narrow-mindedness of others. Was once a Democrat, worked briefly for a Black Democratic Congressman by the name of Donald Payne (D-NJ), then, yes, became a Republican and wrote speeches for Newt Gingrich because I wanted to know exactly what the GOP was doing to our people. I was the spook that beside the lion's door. I have the luxury of knowing what exactly is happening - and I acquired that luxury by accepting the opportunity to work for the 3rd most powerful man in the world in succession to the President.
You'd be amazed at how much of that information I'd be willing to offer if UE afforded the courtesy of a phone call or an email.
In a better world, we'd all benefit tremendously if we learned true political strategy and distribute our power and leverage in both parties and use them like tools to our advantage - as Asians, Jews, Irish, Italians do. This site was created out of that deep, sincere concern for our political direction into the next century and struggling to find a way where we could easily access information without having to rely on mainstream media. In that sense, politicallyblack.com was a success.
The reason behind the Netivation acquisition is relatively simple - Netivation came in at a time when pb.com was completely self-financed at great personal sacrifice. They expressed great interest in our being able to perhaps provide not only information, but proprietary political fundraising and campaign technology that the Black political establishment has yet to utilize - yet, our White counterparts thrive from the use of. They came at a time when Black businesses and interested colleagues were unwilling to put their money where there mouth was. In order to sustain efficacy and longevitiy, we signed a two-year deal with hopes that we could become independently run by the end of that arrangement. We had to get a start somewhere, and the Netivation deal seemed viable.
I should not have to defend our record in terms of the content on the site. It speaks for itself - and the content is far from advocating a conservative or Republican position. It is as non-partisan as it can be. I, of course, should not have to speak of the great, personal challenges experienced putting this site together for the express purpose of informing our people - and, at great expense to family. I do not expect the Founders of UE to recognize the sacrifices made - to recognize that this was the very first site of its kind, that it was undoubtedly needed. I will not need UE to recognize that while other Black websites strive to underestimate the intelligence of our people with the proliferation of cultural sameness and lack of substantive information, pb.com was created literally in a living room, and blew up overnight to gaining the 4 million visits per month we register now because Black people appreciated the fact that they were being served with comprehensive information. We are the originators.
Hence, the symbolism behind the waiter.
The real story behind politicallyblack.com - a struggle to find clear political strategy for a people 400 years disenfranchised. To find someway to engage and advance our politics beyond protests and endless marches, when what is really needed is a savvy strategy that directs us to own our politics: access to information; creation of Political Action Committees; lobbying of elected officials on the state, federal and local levels; fundraising for otherwise economically disadvantaged Black candidates; the next-level ascension of Black business. If we learn to own our politics, I can assure you that issues such as racial profiling, the death penalty, the demise of affirmative action, the dangerous growth of a Black prison population, the state of the African Diaspora - all these issues will become irrelevant over time because we will control our destiny rather than be forever beholden as a swing vote.

I'm really sorry to hear that your site is dying, ts clear from your post that you are passionate and dedicated to what you are trying to do. As Cory noted in a previous post, politicallyblack is definately a case of right concept, poor execution. I'm sure you did a great job at what you were trying to do with the little resources you had. I think you would have a better chance at a sale if you tried to put a quality design, similar to the design that other sites in the politics.com family have, on your site. Also, if you sold the site 100% to netivation and they are trying to get rid of it, why dont you offer to buy it from them at a reduced price, it would make more sence and better PR for them to sell it to you rather then look like "redneck, white boys" trying to kill a great black site. They are a public company they have to avoid bad PR.

well I think that was an excellent comeback and thanks for telling us your side of the story. I kinda figured UE got the republican part wrong, cause i use to suscribe to that Jones newsletter but i stopped cause it seemed more like a newsletter from the Democratic Party then an independent black newsletter.
I wish I had a few million dollars to invest in your company but I dont. And most people here probably dont. But we can give you advice, and i do have to say that some of the things in the website are VERY corny, you should leave all the hip hop lingo to rappers, just stick to giving straighforward, independent news ( no Poll Trains please). And you really need to redesign the entire website. My off the head suggestion is change those colors, not to some red, blak and green, I think using some technoish, flourescent colors would be better. I disagree with UE's anti Flash ideals so try some flash and some Java cause the whole thing looks like a web class design project, you shoud try a more magazine type of design. My personal favorite news website is foxnews.com.
Another suggestions is that you try to be as independent as possible and try to have more info on third parties like Reform, Natural Law Party and the Libertarian Party.

If the site was really all that, they would have just wrote, "Sorry you didn't like it." They have a lot to defend themselves against and they know it. There is a saying that I believe completely fits you right now. It goes, "It is best to be quiet and be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubts". Chile' your vehement rant and slightly scary anger-driven tirade against folks is more a threat to our healthy growth and unity as a people than Selwyn could ever be. First, what is it with some people. One site uses a crow as a logo, now you get a butler? What's next, a shuffling minstrel named Arthur who runs around in whiteface?
Second, why does everything have to be turned into a "urban" forum with the use of slang and catch words. If I'm reading a hip hop website, OK, but when I read about politics, I want to read about it written in English, not hiphopese. The GOP is a party under attack from all quarters. In the last two presidential elections, it got 40 percent of the vote.
In 1992, the GOP got 38 percent of the vote. In 1996, 41. In either case, the GOP was soundly rejected by most Americans.
And while they took and held on to Congress, their reign their has been a pretty savage embarassment for them. They have been completely ineffective against Clinton, not overriding his vetoes or making any kind of coherent case against him.
The GOP has to change or wind up like the Whigs, which is why everyone is marching lockstep behind GW Bush.
In California, the GOP spent millions to send the Mexicans back to Mexico and end affirmative action. Why would any sane person of color vote Republican ? They are the party of the White Man and they lost California.
In new York, Rudy Giuliani has played racial politics with a vengence. He won't even attend the US Open because David Dinkins helped it. Black people get shot by police, local GOP members write it off as an accident.
Do you think another Republican is going to win office in New York city?
The GOP has to change or die. And they know it. The Chicanos in California will elect a communist first.
Look, the idea that only black people vote Democratic in large numbers is wrong. Jews, Asians and Latinos also vote heavily Democratic. Blacks vote heavily democratic because the Dems are responsive to our needs and interests. It is a logical decision, not one based in misguided gratitude.
When Matt Fong ran for Senate in California, he initially appealed to the Chinese voter base. Among Asians, Filipinos, Samoans, and Japanese vote Democratic in large numbers. After all, the Japanese and Filipinos know what the government can do to them.
Vietnamese vote Republican, like Cubans, because of communism. The Chinese are the swing vote.
Yet, when Fong was found to have ties to the far right, his support in the Chinese community evaporated overnight.
No one votes against their own interests. Despite his looks and intelligence, Fong was cozy with the right and Asians knew what that got them. Nothing.
The only people who bring this us are those who want to join the GOP and need political cover.

Bullshit. In the GOP, they sit you at the kiddie table and serve you milk. In the Dems, you sit at the big table with the adults.
Here's an example: when Colin Powell speaks before the GOP, everyone aplaudes and says "what a nice man. Maybe he can be secretary of state"
When Maxine Waters (D-CA) decides she has questions about Joe Lieberman, he deals with them the next day.
The difference in power and respect is so vast, that you should be amazed.
When Black GOP women wanted to do community outreach, the RNC ignored them. They had no interest in dealing with them as equals or potential voters.
The fact is that GOP is the party of racial division and hatred and until that changes, blacks joining the GOP are collaborating with their mortal enemies.
If you want a real political alternative, work with the Green and Reform Parties to elect local officials, people who affect your lives on a daily basis. Then you'll have real leverage over the Dems.
Joining the GOP is like volunteering for mental slavery.
People have to vote their interest, which is what blacks do. By keeping the GOP as far out of power as possible. As long as the GOP defends the Confederacy and white racists in their ranks, they don't want me around. No matter how big a tent you have, you don't have the Klan on one side and the NAACP on the other.
Voting for people who are beholden to you is hardly a stupid policy. Which the Dems are. Contrary to public pronoucement by some leaders, no political campaign takes turn out for granted.
Chuck Schumer was about to lose to Al D'Amato in NY when he reached out for black support. The State AG, Eliot Spitzer was losing when he did the same. Both won, Schumer in a landslide and Spitzer in a razor thin election.
When the GOP campaigns on something besides race, then they can expect the same.
When Tom Kean was governor of New Jersey, he got widespread black support because he sought it and didn't run on race. He was a Republican who had a lot of trust within the black community. Bill Weld in Massachusetts did the same thing. Because they appealed to us as voters, not as just colored folks.
So it can be done. But when the national GOP is fileld with open racists, they don't want us there. If the Dems can kick them out, and they did, the GOP has to do the same.
So if you want to run to the big house, admit that you want to.
Don't pretend that blacks in the Democratic Party are lackies and blacks in the GOP independent thinkers. The people in the street know different.

As a writer for PoliticallyBlack.com, I am not prepared to address the business side of the organziation or the logo. Admittedly the logo the could have been better, but I got the drift of its intent (serving up Capitol Hill to Black people). More important is that at PB I had the ability to write real political commentary, meaning 1500-2000 words for people of color. I don't advocate for any party, I just give my two cents about the issues of the day. Unfortunately, most Black sites are only superficially interested in talking about politics, their real interest is reporting on the exploits of celebrities.
Perhaps, PB should have done things differently, but they were out there attempting to provide information to people of color. I know from the hundreds of reponses that I received from readers that I was indeed providing a service and a young political voice...something that was lacking.
Criticism is always cool, but the real test is to step up and do better.

Hip-Hop Awards Show Scrapped As Chaos Erupts
August 23, 2000 3:34 am EST
PASADENA, Calif. (Reuters) - Police pulled the plug on a televised hip-hop awards show on Tuesday night after fights broke out and audience members rushed the stage and hurled objects, officials and witnesses said.
The chaos took place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, where the annual Source magazine Hip Hop Awards were being taped for broadcast on the UPN network on Aug. 29. Among the stars were Grammy-winning rappers Dr. Dre and Eminem.
According to a recorded message at the Pasadena Police Department, "a large fight" broke out in the auditorium, at 8 p.m. PDT, about 2-1/2 hours into the taping.
A witness said an unidentified man was badly beaten during that fight. Scores of people fled the scene, according to the police message, some toward the exits while up to 75 people ran up onto the stage.
While police were attempting to restore calm, separate scuffles arose throughout the venue, including behind the stage scenery, which began to sway, a witness said. People also began throwing bottles and CDs from their gift bags.
"For the safety of the audience and with no apparent hope of continuing the show peacefully, the Pasadena Police Department announced the show would not continue and asked the audience to leave quietly," the recorded message said.
Most complied with the request, and the area around the auditorium was cleared after about two hours. Police said they did not know the cause of the initial fight, and there were no arrests. Apart from the man who was beaten in the auditorium, no injuries were reported.
Witnesses said the event was beset by scuffles before it began. Punches were thrown as rapper DJ Quik and his entourage arrived, an audience member told Reuters. Inside the auditorium, there was some minor shoving.
A statement from UPN said it was "indeed unfortunate that the irresponsible actions of a few individuals" marred what was supposed to be a cause for celebration.
About a half-dozen awards were presented, and raunchy female rapper L''il Kim had just finished performing before the pandemonium erupted.
A separate, pre-written press release issued after the show ended said Dr. Dre received five awards, including a lifetime achievement honor, while his protege, Eminem, took home two.
The star-studded event boasted "higher production values which elevated this year''s event to the level of other major awards shows," the statement said.

Witnesses said that police had to ask people to leave the auditorium about two hours into the taping of the annual Source magazine Hip Hop Awards after scenery on the stage began to sway because of a backstage fight. The show was being taped to be broadcast on the UPN network on Aug. 29.
The fight backstage took place just after a fight in the auditorium in which a group of men appeared to badly beat a man before police broke it up, witnesses said.
The audience left in an orderly fashion, one witness said.

I think the Source Awards fight started because of DJ Quik. In a book I read about Death Row records, it said Quik was behind some of the bloods killing a crip. Quik left LA and went to Chicago, and wasn't showing his face too much. When he tried to come back to LA, people who were mad at him decided to show him he can't just get one person killed and walk away from it. |

I worked the Soure Awards last year and I know that Suge Knight & death row threatened to throw a monkey wrench into the program then. Im 'bout sure he had something to do with the mess this year. Still, we all know that Mr. Mays only cares about the bottom line. Last year security was lax too and the people got robbed there. Namely Mr. Puff Daddy. At the party afterward people got shot up. The Nation offered security but Mays did not want to pay them what he was eventually willing to pay the white firm. Then too, you know how Made Men are hated (and for good reason if there is any) and how they went and started things in Boston with the lox. Mays manages Maade Men (yes, even after def jam dropped them) so there are more ways than one to hurt mays. In any case, how sad for hip hop. though with all the money it generates this little melee probably wont stop anything. |

So I am anal about their grammar and spelling (or, lack there of). Everyone who posts stories for a sophisticated audience should be. And guess what, almost every time I have pointed shit that is jacked on this site, they have fixed it.
