Urban Cool Has Nothing To Crow About.

Representing the dirty south is urbancool.com. It is the first and only urban portal to make an aggressive run for the IPO market. It probably is the most expensive urban portal that no one knows about. They choose as a mascot "Bebe", a scruffy black crow with some beat up converse and blue eyes. An urban site based in Texas using "Jim Crowe" for promotions? Who runs this site?
The company is run by Jacob R. Miles III, the former CEO of a company called Cultural Exchange Entertainment, which filed for bankruptcy protection and folded, less the a year before UNC is formed. The CFO, Barry M. Levine, is another veteran of a bankrupt company called Sports Heroes; it was a publicly traded sports memorabilia company, which went belly up.  They even brought in an aristocrat with a title, Sir Brian Wolfson, who obviously recommended the Dukes of Hazzard to design the site.
Launched in January of 1999, Urbancool has spent the majority of its time attempting to find ways of convincing Wall Street that its network of websites, based on 2nd tier affiliate relationships, is IPO worthy. Urbancool's revenue model seems to mostly involve over-paying companies like the Wilhelmina Artist Management agency, who received a 14% equity stake in UCN, for the privilege of building and maintaining their websites. In fact, Urbancool pays other companies that they link to. Urbancool's e-commerce strategy seems built around affiliate links to other e-tailers that any website can sign up for. If there is an affiliate program out there, Urbancool has signed up for it. Now that is business development. We wouldn't be surprised if their IP addresses are routed through cow udders.
It's IPO, which has been postponed more times then a French kiss in an Indian movie, has languished along with the company, which suffers from a morass of poor design and a dysfunctional business plan. Urbancool's 8th adjustment to their IPO registration reduced the number of shares being offered from two million to 1.3 million and reduced the pricing by a dollar. The new date for the offering is still not set, but since UCN has no revenues and mounting losses, over $7 million to date, they need to generate some revenue. Perhaps, adding a Hi Bounce Ball dispenser to the NetStand kiosk that they are promoting. You can never have enough of those things.
UrbanIQ and the Platnum Area on Soul Purpose had better watch out, here comes Urbantends (http://www.urbantrends.com). They ask for $20 and they don't even tell you what you are getting. The main site has articles that seem to be written by 5th graders. The aticles all end with "See Ya Later!" and "Bye!", which is basically your cue to break out from this site.

Since I've peeped this site, I've seen a lot of people with credibility in music, and publishing fuck up. It's not funny. We are missing out on a real opportunity to feature issues, entertainment, and overall content that is relevant to our lifestyle. I come off as a low level web hack because I am less than a low level web hack. I am, in short, a philosophy student, that happens to be working as a corporate proposal writer for an urban advertising and marketing firm by the name of Volume Media, Inc.
We have developed, as a conduit to our targeted demographic, a web site with informative issue-related content, that will entertain as well as focus our reader. It seems to me that the dialogue here is a healthy expression of the frustration of knowing what something should or is supposed to be like (i.e. any project, any idea, any vision) and not having the jurisdiction or power to directly change it.
The lack of true understanding of an idea, a project, a vision at the management and ownership level is the fundamental reason that failure is imminent. The online sphere is the newest space for unlimited growth potential. In the case of the "urban" situation, it is still virtually untapped. No matter how much VC money is filtered through one dimensional thinking entities (it is not the online properties fault if someone believes in their idea and they give them millions; shit I would take it too!) but what happens when you have millions and really don't know what to do with it. You get the flyest offices, give out hefty salaries, stay pretty, ride pretty, oh hire some webdesigners, pay for syndicated content....) The game seems to be playing like a "pyramid" scheme, those who got in early got the cheese. Its too bad that VC and other funding resources will soon hold great caution and scrutiny at potentially viable online business ventures. This maybe a godsend for the users/consumers though because it will force anyone else trying to get the dough to come with something worth visiting.
I don't even think there is much of a true understanding of the "urban" online market and how to harness it. From a global perspective it is tremendous growing exponentially. I recieve e-newsletters from 6 continents, from areas like South Africa, Singapore, Estonia, Finland, Morocco, to name a few(detailing "urban" culture(music, film, etc..) the global coverage translates into millions of users searching to access a common "culture" online.
On an elementary level With access to the very people, places, and destinations, that the masses hold closer to god, shouldn't it be possible to get the masses attention?? The obvious answer is yes, but again with no strategy and no vision, you can take two pictures get a paragraph article, some ill no relevancy story bought from junk news delivery service and give away some free e-mail. There is no excuse for lack of interesting content. From over three years of monitoring urban related websites user activity(through postings, number of websites added, longevity of website links, the ever-shady hit counters, membership adds, ICQ adds, Newgroups, activity by geography, the numbers dont lie...I wonder if a company with 50 million dollars can afford to pay the average ambitious driven young person $15 an hour to join their research and development department and surf the web.
Well I can rant and rave allday, theres so much more I would like to talk about. Thank you Urban Expose for creating a forum where we can all say what the fuck we want.

Yes this site is very entertaining, you and some other regular posters show that by posting and interacting here each and every day. However, what I find incredible that we in the "urban" community will find so many ways, to rip things, and turn around in the very next minute wanting to be down.
Some people do come to this site to start trouble and beef. That's been a given since day one, but we all know that fact is apart of this site's appeal, folks can say whatever the hell they want. However when that same draw is not shall we say, cute to some they get on the unity soapbox, talking ish about let's bring the community together, then in the next post, ripping the next site, or unbelievably this one, or the ever so tacky promoting their own personal projects at the expense of others.
Is that bringing the community together by brother? I don't think so. Name one site that's like this one about the urban space online?
Impact247.com? SoulPurpose? I don't think so. No one gave a damn about the urban internet space, except to name drop about who was at the launch party until Urban Expose'. So good, bad, or otherwise, this is what we got. And I like it. At least it's something.

That is a great point, seven million gone and NOTHING to show for it. Take a look at the IPO filing on Yahoo, the CEO is paying himself $175K and the company will pay him another $138K after any IPO. This is in addition to the moneys he will make from the IPO directly. Of course all of this assumes that the company will have an IPO, which is highly unlikely.

I put my real name on my posts because I have nothing to hide and no particular interest in posting as a persona. I understand why others may feel otherwise, but the reality is that anonymous posting encourages a lowest-common-denominator atmosphere.
Some online communities that require all aliases be backed up with real names at least force people to justify what they say. It's not censorship--you can say what you want. But if you say something racist/ homophobic/ funny/ stupid/ sexy posting as "RacerX" that's one thing. And so that's what happens when your (lack of a) business plan comes up short - you adopt the latest industry buzzword, in this case "B2B," and imbricate it into your stank collage of other peoples' ideas.
I've seen this happen up close & personal more than once now. Seems to be some confusion out there about the relationship between "business model" and "business plan."
I am SO waiting to see how this plays out in the (ahem) urban space, where - above and beyond the audience-segmentation issue, AKA does "urban" = "hip hop" or not - blackplanet and urbancool and 360 and, jeez, BET for chrissakes are all trying to defibrillate a stagnant business model. Which one'll opt for a B2B-portal makeover first? |

On other matters, not getting paid is just one of the hazards of being a journalist. When you've got a racist boss it's like that joke about "y'all gon make me lose my mind, up in here, up in here" being the black workplace anthem....
