Can we start talking about the 'urban' companys that don't really have urban management? i.e. black workers and white management....these same companies are 'powered' by urban creatives but the actual decision makers couldn't name one hip hop artist etcetera and actually have spent most of their lives avoiding anything 'urban'...Again the people who are creating the culture aren't benefitting...

you all seem to be defining urban as black. why are you limiting it to this, when so many diverse ethnicities inhabit the same urban environment that you and me do? There's no mistaking that white management is controlling the companies pointed out here, but perhaps, this reflects on the initiatives of non-whites, or lack thereof. i am half dominican, half puerto rican, working at an urban company, under white AND black management, founded by a black man raised in Harlem, that attended Harvard. The opportunities i see here aren't to hook up with music and fashion industry types, but to learn things that i probably couldn't learn at a company only interested in black people. urban sites should dedicate themselves to the empowerment and entertainment and education and understanding for EVERYBODY!
so, dear sirs, or madames, please take care in how you express your dislikes, because you never know how credible your reputation may remain. |
An interesting point made: the equating of "urban" to "black".
In truth, what defines urban is the intermixing of cultures and ethnicity, not the ethnicities themselves.
Is Lou Reed urban? You bet your ass.
Is Jim Carroll urban? Yes he is.
Is Henry Rollins urban? Yes he is.
Is Ricky Martin urban? Not really.
Is Tito Puente urban? Not really.
Is Branford Marsalis urban? Not really.
UBO is a melting pot of New Yorkers and, as such, reflects that diversity. African Americans, Latinos, Asians, Jews, Polish, Russians--they're all there and that IS a reflection of the NYC urban experience. Do these people benefit from the fruits of the marketing efforts? Hell yes they do.
If you want to discuss issues of a "Digital Divide", then we have to address issues of class. Why is there a digital divide? It's because there is a general push toward wealth and resources being consolidated in the hands of a few while the rest of the bunch remain in the technological dark ages. But that is just business.
Using the model of "white" capitalism, what obligation do any of these execs have to the disenfranchised masses to which they claim affinity? None really.
Getting black people wired is a seperate issue and precludes a progressively political agenda and what successful corporation out there can any of you point to with a seriously progressive political agenda?

Have to agree with the lack of diversity in the
ownership and management of "urban"
internet ventures. It's the same old story, i guess.
How come no one is addressing that aspect of the "Digital Divide", how even in the
"new" economy, very few minorities are wired into
real leadership and equity?

Ok, first of all, anybody who's ever met Darrien Dash knows this brother is a perfect representative for the *digital divide*. Why? He's technologically illiterate and in his own words considers the web "the next big hustle". And he perceives of himself as the grandmaster pimp of it all. I think all of the fighting and fussing has to stop. We as black people are making moves and running our own companies and should not be trying to be bringing each other down like crab in the barrels. We should feel good and proud because we finally found jobs and can really bring a lot of good things to the people who use computers. Everyone has a good site and we can all make money and write stories. I have not written for anyone yet but I want to be a writer one day. I want everyone to be good to each other and stop fighting. Check this site out: Urbanexpose. It's very funny. I'm sending you this article because it talks about blackplanet and other "urban" sites that are popping up. Keep in mind, the people writing this are old, jaded journalists who are bitter as hell. But also funny as hell.
